Not the purpose of this study, but possibly an interesting side-effect Could be a simpler (maybe more reliable is a better term?) method for deep space communications than RF, once the technology gained power and shrunk.. a lot... |

As far as I remember the CERN Large Electron Positron ring, now stopped to make way to LHC in the same tunnel, had fired a neutrino beam to the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory in Abruzzo, Italy, which hosts a large neutrino liquid detector. But how to modulate a neutrino beam is beyond my knowledge and I think also beyond everybody's else knowledge. Tullio |

Excellent, thanks for the reference Tullio Neutrino Factory aside, this is pretty much what I was looking for. I'm just guessing here, but perhaps a key to very basic modulation would be (pseudo) phase based, perhaps by timed collision with the -anti elements or magnetic deflection, producing a veryyyyyyy slow but possibly successful message. |

Lets just assume that there was a way to modulate it. A neutrino beam could be more effective on interstellar distances because it wouldn't spread over an always bigger getting area like RF does over time (at least the are wouldn't be that large) and loose much power in that way. But you would have to aim your neutrino-beam veeeery precisely for that. You would have to consider the relative speed of your star and the destination star, maybe even the speed of the destination planet, in order to precalculate where it will be at the time the beam reaches its destination. |

I was considering planetary, well, at best solar distances, such as direct communications with operations in the asteroid belt or fields, or planetary far-side (blackout) satellite communications - tho I suppose as a long-rage (very long range) communications method with very precise targeting it could work just as well. But assuming the modulation is solved, what and how would it be targeted? I mean, not the "neutrino radio" - assuming that's solved - but rather how to target precision particle streams over interstellar distances. How to account for drift and all that. I remember (re)assembling a surplus gas helium-neon laser back the 70s, mounting it on the side of my reflector tube of my telescope, pointing it at the stars and wondering if any remnants or dim view ever got "there" - probably never got out of the atmosphere, but it was fun to think it did... (apologies, reminiscing). |
