This is a fictitious story with nothing to do with these forums or any real bars or people. This breaks no rules as this particular thread has no set topic and the story itself could be classified as G-Rated for all readers.
Yes, I'm bored. Sorry for the weird story...
Can you imagine walking into a familiar bar one day and notice all the people are divided into distinct groups? You ask the barkeep what's going on and he responds with...Sir, every group here is divided into specific topics for discussion. The group in that corner are discussing sports, the group over there are discussing politics, The group over there are discussing evolution, etc. Your response is to ask for a table where you can just relax and talk about anything that comes up. No! says the barkeep. You either pick a group/discussion to enter or you can't stay here. You can make your own table to discuss whatever you want but you need to read this book (Barkeep hands him a 1000 page book of rules). And keep in mind everything you say will be recorded and reviewed for acceptance and to enforce the rules. If you break a rule, part of your discussion will be removed from the table. If you break a rule twice you will be kicked out of the bar for a certain number of days. If your off topic for a particular table, part of your discussion will be moved to another table.
Your response to all of this.. This is America isn't it? Yes, says the barkeep, but this is my bar in America and I make the rules. Your response.. What about the freedom of speech that's given to us in the constitution? You have no freedom of speech in my bar on my private property, says the barkeep. Furthermore, I've decided that I personally don't like you...I'm going to keep a very close eye on every single word you say and harass you every chance I get.
Several years have passed and you visit the bar. You know very few people now, most have left or have been banned from the bar for talking how they want and about any topic they want at the wrong tables. You ask the barkeep how he can make enough money to keep the place open. He says that we are Government and privately funded. We don't need a lot of customers to keep this bar open. And I remember you! The guy who asks too many questions. That's one of our strictest rules.. No questions about how we run this place! Now get out! We'll send you a letter telling you when your allowed back.
When the humanity and spontaneousness of conversation is removed, we tend to make very little conversation or any at all.

. . . no, nothing to do with these forums . . . nothing at all . . .
But the way I heard this story, there were 20 or 30 people who came into the bar every once in a while, harassing other patrons who enjoyed these conversations despite the bartender's restrictions. Some of the "20 or so" developed a plan to force some of the patrons they didn't like out of the bar by lying to the liquor commission about what was going on in the bar, and what the people, who these plotters disliked, did outside the bar.
Ironically, some of the patrons who were the target of this plot had been asked by the bartender to keep an eye on this group of 20+ people. These watchers found out about the plot and helped the bartender stop it, so that the bar could continue to provide its unique service. Rather than be happy with this, the bartender tightened his rules and ignored the very people who helped uncover the plot! And now, as you have pointed out, "the humanity and spontaneity" is gone and the conversations are fewer, guarded, and mostly uninteresting.

Hehe! Not sure. Was it something about ping pong balls and muscle control? No, I think that was a conversation with Misfit.

I think what I would do here is bring in my own table and easy chair. I would then use the barkeeps book as a footrest. Everyone will be keeping a close eye on me because I have Milla at my side... or on my lap. Want an autograph?

Hehe! Always thinking outside the box. And hell yes I want an autograph.. Just as long as it's Milla's autograph on one of her pictures.
I don't want your autograph on a picture of that 400LB naked guy sitting at his computer! :)

I've been in this bar too.
But what happened was one of the bartenders would get involved in the discussion to the point where name calling started, then drop out of the discussion for a few days to suddenly come back in and throw patrons out.
I'm sure glad THAT bartender is gone.

I've seen this here, but I don't think it's as intentional and methodical as the bar. I've noticed some individuals trying to play barkeep, with bits and pieces of the story being an accurate reflection, but as a whole not so much.
And this is no different from most forums online.

You forgot the story of the roving barkeep's assistant. He wanders by each table and listens to the conversation. If it doesn't meet with his approval, but it isn't covered by the 1000 page rule book, he goes to another table and taps someone on the shoulder and whispers, if you don't like the conversation over at that table, here is a complaint form, please use it.
