I do not want to start any commentary on the man, his politics, or his horrendous crimes against humanity....

But....

These pictures have an amazing historic value regardless...

From the Life archives......

They have been unearthing some amazing things as they proceed with their digitizing of the old film and negatives in their vaults.......

This man is no hero. Unless you or your family have seen the destruction, should you voice/have a right to any thoughts.

This is what one of your relatives left.

My Dad saw all of that and more from '42-'46 and was recommended for a commendation for what He did as He did His duty, He wasn't a front line soldier of course, He was a corporal in the 368th Medical(that's all that the sign in a picture ever said). He never said anything about what He did, I found out much later in the letters He wrote to Mom, She kept them all and the pictures too, I don't think He ever knew that. I take It You're a citizen of Germany of course, Dad was in the US Army, He never killed anybody as He was only issued a sidearm as He could lead people and drive a stick, Otherwise cause of one of His eyes He'd never have been accepted as a volunteer(He wasn't drafted when Herr Hitler declared War on the USA, Totally stupid as He couldn't touch our factories as Germany didn't have any weapons that could reach that far and He believed everything the double agents fed Him too, But then the Brits and US had broken the so called unbreakable enigma code, Even after a 5th code wheel had been added, We here in the US had the worlds first true electronic computer and It was much faster than the mechanical wheels).

I did NOT call him a 'hero'........

My Grandmama and Grandpappa immigrated to this country when I was very young........I am second generation from Germany......but they danced though all the hoops and did all the dances to get into this country legally......so save me the angst.

I was only bringing up the historic significance of the photos.........

And since I believe you are from the mother country too.........you should be the last to chastise me. This is historical, not rhetorical......

Ya, I hear Ya Mark, It was a brutal time back then and as someone once said, "War is Hell". Not like I'd know of course, the opposite of Peace isn't often Freedom, It's usually Slavery or Death, As Freedom's price is usually paid for in blood. As to dances, My ancestors did the same as Your Grandparents did, Of course It was back around 1850, Nearly in time for the US Civil War in fact. sigh.

. . . My Father was born near Berlin - he escaped during the Regime and assisted quite a number of people back then to escape Germany as well

< a number of those that he'd actually help escape - later - when i had arrived in Los Angeles, CA - seeking Studio spaces - met a couple of individuals - whom i got to respect quite a bit and received great space for Studios [with excellent pricing for said studios] . . . long story

- but @ some time - during conversations - the issue was always brought up

- IF i was related to a particular Sr. - which i obviously knew - because it was one and the same - my Father

[of which i am the Jr]

strange how fate works eh . . .

[Note: my Father refused to be a part of the Hitler Youth in that day]

Sorry I bought the whole sh.. up...............

And the mod was right when he moved it from the Cafe to the political thread because he knew that folks would stray from my original intent.

Yes......this madman did impact humanity for all time.......
Yes......I was born second generation German......and proud of it......
Yes.......my heritage does not prevent me from recognizing the good things from it and shaming the bad.......

Sorry Mark, I noticed that CNN mentioned the photos, But I didn't go look as I'd seen enough of Him during My research of WWII while trying to understand My Dad. Now I know about as much about Him as I'll ever know and His time over there and rarely do any research on this subject anymore. He just did what was needed and survived, Somewhat changed of course, Will I know the exact details of what He did? No, I do know He was considerate of the wounded on both sides as that's what was written, Beyond that I haven't any real idea what His duties were outside of being a courier sometimes.

The photos are what they are
I don't agree with msattler on many issues but in no way has he portraid Hitler in a positive manner in this thread.
These are photos taken during one of the worst episodes in modern human history and were offered with no commentary.

That name alone makes any sane discussion impossible.
I'm sure there are those who believe any mention of him should be erased to remove his ideas from all thought forever. There are others who want the memory of his infamy seared into everyone's conscious so it is never repeated. Each has a point. Each is wrong.

As the generation who fought dies off, their children are finding the stories that were too painful to ever tell. It is history. It should be preserved.

I'm likely here today because someone mixed up a urine sample. That made my dad 4F, otherwise he would have been a mud marine and likely got slaughtered on some Pacific island. What happened is his electrical engineering degree got him a job at the Naval Ordinance Lab in DC. There he met my mother who was a clerk at the Navy Department. Even though he had a desk job in DC he didn't talk about the war. The only comment he ever made was one day while watching Midway on TV, when the segment came on about the electric arming switches and the bombs dropping when they were activated he said that heads rolled over that.

I don't see where ULI claimed Mark said Hitler was a hero. All she added was her comments and it would seem Mark took them as accusatory instead of open thoughts from another poster. It would seem this is a recurring theme in Mark's topics where he consistently thinks people are saying things that they haven't said.

Uli's post, directly after mine, was....

It certainly seemed directed at me....

Uli and I are very good friends....so don't stir the pot please.

~ sagen, was Sie & bedeuten; Mittel, was Sie ~ sagen

< Interpreted:

. . . THAT is True SIR!!!

ex. when one says NO and somebody else states that [in their Opinion] that the other said Yes - this is the case whereas one should NOT be allowed an 'Opinion'

~ say what you mean & mean what You say ~

...but that doesn't mean it was directed at you simply because it was after yours. Since hers was the first post in the thread, it had no choice but to be after yours. This is why there are reply and quote buttons; not all posts directly after are in direct reply.

I simply think you're too quick to jump the gun is all. Then you get aggressively defensive over it like this post to me. Many just want to contribute to the topic at hand.

Come on, Mark. She's your friend! I simply read it as she was trying to agree what a horrible man Hitler was, as you mentioned in your first post. She was trying to add to the topic of the horrible things Adolf did by adding pictures too. Wouldn't that seem a much more reasonable response than assuming she was accusing you of saying he was a 'hero'?

Uli and I are very good friends....so don't stir the pot please.

Not trying to. I'm actually trying to make you realize what you should already realize through a friendship. Friends don't jump on friends - you could have given her the benefit of the doubt. If there were any doubt, you could have always asked rather than jumped, no?

Absolutely. Knowing this, you should be willing to read what people say as their simple thoughts, not as everything attacking you.

Geez, Ozz.........
Now, (unless I am following my usual accused pattern),you are accusing me of being overly defensive in my post to YOU?

LOL....when will the cycle end, my friend?

I thought I was simply stating my case.........

Get a chuckle out of it and move on, folks, there is nothing to see here except Hitler pics.........

Geez.......and all I was trying to do at the onset was to try to link to some pics that I thought had some significant historical value......

Sorry for trying to share something of more than teletubby intellect.

Ya know......they had some vintage pics of Monroe they found too.......
