Intel has has just been fined $1.45 billion by the EEC. It is to do with AMD and the monopoly they have within the EEC ( I think ) If I am wrong about the fine can someone explain it correctly please.

The fine is from the European Union madmac, new version of the EEC, just a bigger bunch of buttholes.

The fine is supposedly for the use of monopolistic advertising and selling campaigns that have stopped AMD from selling it's products.

How advertising can be classed as an abuse of a monopoly god only knows. I have never seen an AMD advert.

This is just as stupid as the fine they imposed on Microsoft.

The fine was partly due to Intel paying kickbacks(discounting chips) to computer makers for using their brand chip

This isn't just "European buttholes fining a US company to justify their positions & high salaries".. please read before you judge.

In Dutch here and here

Google can do some translating for you like so and so

As I have red, the EC has also been in contact with the FTC, so it is very well possible that the FTC will be fining Intel as well..

The Telegraph here covers the lead up and the verdict:

Intel fined €1.1bn by the European Commission for anti-competitive behaviour

Knocks Microsoft down to the number 2 spot for largest fine for anticompetitive behaviour. (Perhaps, that is, until the next set of court cases go through...)

To my mind, all unfairly vicious stuff to keep prices artificially high and to keep us under the control of the manufacturers and their Marketing...

Wow. All this time I just thought I was paying slightly more for a vastly superior product. Oh wait, that hasn't changed. LOL

Sorry, sorry. I couldn't resist. I'm not trying to start and Intel/AMD fanboy riot. Please don't post (manufacturer) is better than (manufacturer) 'because' messages.

To be honest, if they have broken any antitrust laws in the EU then they deserve to be punished for it. 1.5 billion is not a large fine for intel to deal with, its less than 5% of their annual income and it could have been worse because the EU has the power to fine up to 10%.

While some of the Intel tactics are deplorable, giving them a hefty fine is not the best way to ensure compliance.

Personally I do have a lot of friends from Euroland, but the antics of the Eurocrats are getting more and more, erm, troubling. From regulating bananas, it seems like they wanted to regulate what everone can and should buy and at what price.

Coming from a developing world, I think that the Eurocrats are actually putting a lot of trade barriers by excessive regulations that only mostly EU based entities can (and cares to) meet. And too bad the countries in this part of the world can't do anything to protest EU regulations, e.g. rules that mean some of our bananas are not bananas by their definition.

By the way AMD are no saints either. It is personally insulting to see that "Made in Malaysia" on AMD CPUs have to be preceded by "Diffused in Germany". At least I don't see that on Intel chips. They just say where they are assembled (e.g. Philippines, Costa Rica, Malay...).

Good for you!

Do you find it as much of a joke as the rest of us 700 million?

Hope your enjoying spending Great Britain's £40 million pounds every day.

Anyway, Sutaru the fine was handed down by one of the EU's many self serving councils. They are who I was calling the "not very nice".

The fine is a joke, the judgement is based on the fact that Intel were able to offer discounts and incentives to use their products. Any company in a position to do so, does the same.

If Intel wants to do business in Europe they have to play by the EU's rules. Intel will just increase european prices in onder to recoup anyway.

Note: It helps when the rules are administered fairly and equally.

Agreed. Otherwise I'd like to see more fines against every other company that offers me coupons (discounts) for being a current customer. Deals and incentives are part of the business process of retaining/gaining customers.

The articles I read (more than one) indicated the fine was made because Intel required companies to delay sales, or even not carry, competitive cpus (e.g. AMD) in order to receive Intel's discounts and incentives.

I have no problems with companies offering discounts and incentives for purchasing their products as long as it isn't dumping product at below cost or requiring restrictions on competitor products. Which is apparently what Intel WAS doing.

Satan,

You are from the UK I see.. as far as I know the UK is part of the EU!? I don't know why you are so anti EU... you are negative, suggestive, etc. I would appreciate it if you could be a bit more decent and stick to the facts.

Intel is fined $1.45 billion for sales tactics in Europe

First, a computer maker has to agree to buy the chips. In that stage, AMD has alleged, Intel has illegally used its dominant position by offering huge rebates to PC makers that promise to buy lots of Intel's chips. AMD argues that the discounts can effectively make some chip orders free, and that it would have to lose money on sales to keep up.

I hope that means my mail-in rebates and volume discounts from NewEgg aren't illegal. Someone call the computer cops!
