CUDA is a special programing feature on relatively high-end Nvidia video dispay cards which allows especially written software to run on the video card itself and do similar processing as the CPU in your computer. It has very limited capabilities compared to your computers CPU but with some specialized software like Seti is using, it can do the work much faster then the CPU. The Seti graphics can't be displayed while it is in use to process Seti work units.

The screensaver component of Seti is just a graphic representation of the analysis that is being done and is not necessary to process data.
