I have 3pc's all runing Boinc 6.6.0
1 AMD 9850 quad, Vista home, giving avarage wu 1670.

2 AMD 9950 quad, XP home, giving avarage wu 1650.
Installed 9800GTX+ at christmas now giving avarage of 1750.

3 AMD 6400+ dual, XP pro, giving avarage wu 710

My question is:- Should I move the cuda to the AMD 6400+ and what increase if any could I expect?

I would put it in the system that had the biggest case and best air flow. Make sure the cpu had a really good HSF if you are running 24/7.

Also, make sure whatever system you put it in (ideally with the best airflow) that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is powerful enough to handle the load.

Hi Ozzfan
Large fan and psu were installed into AMD 9950 along with cuda.
Problem is:- bangs for bucks it's not a big uplift, overclocking was better.

If i move fan, psu and cuda to the AMD 6400+ would this pc show a better work unit increase, or is cuda processing just a way of burning $$$$

I honestly don't think it really matters. It would be like deciding to move a dual-core and quad-core CPU between motherboards trying to find which one performed faster - there might be a slight variation in performance, but most likely a negligible one and not worth the time or consideration. The GPU is going to crunch all that it can regardless of system, as long as the CPU is powerful enough to feed it (and most dual-cores and quad-cores are more than capable of feeding the GPU).

As for the increase in processing, CUDA on BOINC is still a new thing and many kinks are still being worked out. Give it time and I'm sure it will be worth the investment.

[Edit] It would seem that there have been gains with CUDA processing. See this thread for bragging rights for those with nVidia GPUs.

Also - check that the card fits into the mombo. I ended up with a massive swap of power, video and mombo's when a gtx280 didnt seat over a capacitor like I thought it would. This is what the XFX support people recommended:

The 9800GTX+ should be a good CUDA card. I beleive that it has 112 stream processors at least on it. Since the machine will be running all or most of the time, power consumption may be an issue. I had to upgrade the power supply in my new box to 500 watts for my 9600GSO card and use separate power connections. It runs like a champ now with the 6.08 release.

Good luck

Hi
I use a Corsair vx550w with dual connectors for the graphics.
The 9800gtx+ needs at least 450watts and a minimum of 24Amps on the 12volt rail(quote from the label on the box).

this is a lot of power to raise the avarage work unit count from 1650 to 1750
on my AMD9950

As you say, the 6.08 release are running well, but the server has been rationing them today.

As OzzFan suggested I will leave the installation as it is for now and see how the new release settles down

I just upgraded my 6400+ to a 9950. The first post shows that the 9950, with twice as many core gets more than twice as much credit. All things being equal I should stick with the 9950 for BOINC although the 6400+ might be faster in certain aspects. This shows folding at home is faster on the 6400+.

I put in a 9800GX2 for CUDA and that should do just fine, shouldn't it?
