apparently nobody gives a rats patoot about this topic. Dang shame. heck of a day when a person has to use euphonisisms to say what he darn well pleases. Sexual acting Heck!!! it's for real. I had a biblical discussion about swear words and their sustitutes with a bible thumping lady. She loved to substitute softer curses for the "real" curse words. I asked if she knew that she was still cursing regardless of the changed softer word. If you understand you are doing it then God understands it so you've broken a commandment and you are only deceiving yourself. So just stop cursing. now the person this is all about was a DJ that thought his mike was off and was playing national news. He assumed that his producers had turned off the local sound board and the only thing live was a national feed. Honestly though I think the people should be fined that actually do it. Bono, Cher, The dumb ass football player in the Locker room should all talk as if the Pope or their mother was standing in front of them. You don't talk like that to your mother(hopefully) and you shouldnt talk like that on the radio/TV In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

So, the Supreme Court may be deciding to empower the FCC with the ability to render punitive measures against Broadcast Network Television if expletives are not deleted on live telecasts. I think the Supreme Court has already ruled on this matter in the past and will cite its previous opinion. It went something like... NO, the FCC does not have the power to penalize a Network or private citizen for content which may be found to be profane by some viewers. The FCC is not a Court of Law, it cannnot conduct trials, it cannot take punitive measures against anyone. It is a government agency in the Executive branch of the Gov't. Its powers are limited to requesting that the Justice Dept take action if a statute governing the use of vulgar, obscene or pornographic language is violated. It has been a while since I studied the law, but I think that is what was said in the past. What I always did in college was to speak my punctuation. We had a guy who believed he was the reincarnation of St Augustine in our philosophy class. You can just imagine the s*** he came up with. So I would say, "Well comma parentheses St Dumb*** end parentheses comma your thesis on original sin requires a belief that God has made a prejudicial judgment against all mankind. I find this unacceptable." When people objected I reminded them that parenthetical expressions are never actually said aloud. The faculty loved it! |

Joe Scarborough of "Morning Joe" on MSMBC let the F-word slip in a sort of parenthetical quote yesterday. It was non rancorous and not mean spirited and he was describing the gestures of someone else. It will be interesting to see what is made of this. On HBO you can hear the word repeatedly as "ART" imitates life. I still find it sophomoric when gratuitous swearing is included to excess. The message or story would be just as powerful--most of the time--without the exercise of what they must think is an avant-garde right. Trying not to be a prude but good taste limits excess in all things. |

for the life of me I can't wrap my brain around this one. If people are so worried about what their little darlings are seeing or hearing they need only head to a mall and listen to constant chronic vulgarity coming out of peoples mouths in full view and hearing of small children and the faint of heart. I find it improper to scold a Tv network or Personality when the average American can not produce a scentence that isn't laced with one form of vulgarity or another. perhaps we should fine parents for their inability to control their children In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Kids typically learn swear words from other kids, which learn them from their parents. Or I could have worded it that kids learn swear words from their parents and then spread it around school. But then it would be the other kids that are bad, or the school system is bad, ... the internet is bad. Pick the poison which best fits your sarcasm. But with 1-2 parents, and 30-40 kids in a class the odds greatly favor they pick up more cursing at school than in their own home. Edit: I can even tell you the exact circumstances and details I learned the "C" word. But to keep it short it was at school. me@rescam.org |

it only takes a quart of motor oil to spoil 1 million gallons of water. It takes one potty mouth to spoil a whole room full of kids In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

To heck with those darn language police. People are people and people will learn all the words. even the words that we allow kids to use that mean the same as the cuss words ... example "heck" or "HE Double Hockey Stick". If a kid smashes his finger and yells "fudge", well to him it means "F***". (and I use stars because of I am afraid of what may happen if I don't). Replacement words are the same and therefore, I feel we already allow everyone to say everything. Chris. |

Replacement words are the same and therefore, I feel we already allow everyone to say everything. As adults we all know all the dirty words and what they mean and have heard lots of creative ways of not saying them. Children may not yet know the dirty words, wouldn't know what most of them mean, but have heard many of the creative ways of expressing them. I digress. As we age something else changes in us. A child trying to hammer a nail and misses and hits the finger will cry. A bit older child may yell out in paid but not cry because crying is for babies. An adult is likely to cuss. It diverts the mind from the sensations. I have nothing against a person who cries out in pain. Strong pain removes the ability to think. I have an issue with a person who in the presence of children utters a non-stop stream of expletives. It shows their level of intelligence. Ya know, much like, ya know, some other, ya know, forms of expression, ya know. Children who do it, do so to get attention. That happens when "look" "mommy" and "daddy" stop working to get attention. Was there a point to all this? Oh, yes, broadcast TV. It seems to me that entertainment professionals ought to know what the rules are and stay inside them. It also seems to me that professional broadcasters ought to know that putting a mike in a sports game is going to pick up a lot of salty language and being professional have the smarts to know they have to edit it. It also seems obvious that parents might like to know in advance if a place is likely to expose their children to something before it happens. |

Way back on November 21, 1947, Mom wrote in her and Dads diary, that I (at an age of only three years five months) was cussing "Dammit". They were surprised that I was doing it so efficiently. I don't remember any of this at all. All I can figure is that I must have overheard Dad several times, because Mom never cussed. Even in 1954, when some classmate tricked me into saying "damn" which resulted in a reprimand from my fourth grade teacher, I didn't know what "damn" or cussing meant. So kids may pick up cussing from the people around them, especially their elders. |

I agree with most of your points. The question is what rules should the stay in. They were staying in the rules and if something "weird" happened they would pay the fine. The problem is that the enforcement of the rules changed without notice once bush got elected. The arguement is about "who" gets to create the rules and about a way to make them enforced in a fair and equal way. at least that was my thought. But, heck, i really don't know a dern thing anyways.
