What do you think?

Real or just getting away from dipping poll numbers?

Or afraid to go one on one?

What do you think about Obama's comment that a president needs to be able to handle more than one thing at a time and this debate issue is a example of it?

News sources (radio and CNN) are reporting a deal has been made to resolve the crisis so there's no reason to skip it

Just heard that the White House meeting didn't go well.

I don't think MCCain is wimping out, he's been begging Obama to meet with him at Town Hall meetings all summer, even offering to pay Obama's travel expenses for them, and Obama has flatly refused to attend any of the meetings.

Why then would McCain be afraid to debate Obama?

Thats the million (or 700 billion) dollar question. Here is his chance. He wanted it so bad. Now he does not want it. Or does not have the mental ability to do two things at once.

Here is another example. I was watching Leatherman last night. McCain was going to be on that show, but had to cancel so he could get to Washington. Leatherman found out he was down the road filming a TV interview instead. Leatherman asked if McCain needed a ride to the airport because it seemed McCain forgot he was going to Washington.

So he kept an engagement he thought was important and skipped one he did not.

So which is it? Should he deal with a "crisis" that going to cost billions and affect thousands of Americans, should he place the economic welfare of those citizens on the back burner for a debate, or simple half-azz do both?

Of course there's always the possibility that you'll be critical of ANYTHING he does...

they both went to a meeting, but it was fruitless , democrats and republicans were close to make a deal but republicans made another
version of solution, so they are not even close to make any new law right now, and
stocks may start to fall even faster. mccain or obama don´t have power to make any kind of difference to the subject.

I can see some points for him skipping the debate. But not enought. People need to see the canidates side by side. I know I do. Hear where they say and see them put to the fire with timed questions. I don't think a few hours late at night will stop him from being able to do his job. If running for president is stopping him from doing his job maybe he should have thought about stepping down and letting Arizona elect another senator so he could be free of the job.

Actually until recently I have respected McCain. In fact he has been a role model of mine. I supported him back in 2000 and hoped he would have come out in 2004. Just to be fair the pick of Palin was the final nail in my McCain support. There were plenty of other qualified GOP women out there if McCain wanted to make history. I find the choice of a woman great. That way no matter who wins on of those stupid myths can be put to rest. Those myths being a black man or a woman can not be president.

Funny we didn't hear this excuse from you when Obama allegedly had more important matters to deal with.

Last time I checked, neither a woman nor a black has ever won, or even temporarily held, the White House.

Are you sure you know the difference between myth and fact?

You are right. That is why this is so great. No matter who wins. If McCain wins then Palin becomes VP. And everybody will have to accept that a woman can become president or at least VP then. And if Obama wins then we get the black myth erased. No matter what one of those ugly stupid myths goes away.

Anyway, we have an update: McCain will debate, even without an agreement. Now I know this sounds a lot like a flip flop, but according to the McCain camp it is not. They say enough progress has been made. This could be right, the way things go we could have an agreement today. But it is just of my opinion he is doing this to save face.

As to Obama not stepping down as a senator to run. I think he should have. But nobody does these days. Be it a senator or governor. Well I think Edwards did back in 04, but I think he was going to anyway.

If you are thinking about a month or two ago when Obama and his family went on Vacation for a week ... I don't remember their being a formal debate then. One agreed on by both parties.

Those myths being a black man or a woman can not be president.

As long as we maintain a 50/50 men to women ratio with one black man present... ;)

(That's no myth, that's standard hiring procedure.)

Chris, I must assume that you are a young person because about 25 years ago the Democrats had a female VP candidate on the ticket.
Geraldine Ferraro run with Walter Mondale.

I've been rather amused at watching the Republicans congratulating themselves over reinventing the wheel.

Might happen this time. The time may be right for it.

I think the citizens of the US of A are more ready for a black president than for a female president. That can come later, in an about 8 - 12 years time. (This based on the timeframe of the Black movements in the 60' to the Womens Lib movements in the 70') ...

Blacks only make up 12-14% of our total population...females, over 50% of our total population.

You will see a female President before a black

We will see. Still, I don't think this will differ from the historic development, where the Blacks got rights before the female population. A Black male might win before a female of any colors.

Now, even Palin is a woman, as Vice President she is without influence, she's ornament. Just as the other Vice Presidents have been ornaments. Have there been other Vice Presidents who ever came into office, and with this to power, besides Lyndon B. Johnson and Gerald Ford?

I experienced an absurd anecdotal that is remotely connected to this last week, watching "Australian Idol". Women, generally speaking, don't vote for women, even if the women in question suit the position better. In my admittedly limited experience, i.e. two sisters, and working amongst women on a daily basis, you'll get a male president, of whatever race, just as long as our better halves remain jealous, conniving and as superficial as my sisters and colleagues ;D
