How are the command line options for seti boinc in linux (redhat 7.2) used? I am a linux noob. I start the program by going to the run box and browsing for the boinc program and start it in a terminal window. Where would I type in the option or how would I start the program with an option, such as -update_prefs or any of the other options? Please give specific directions to follow.

thank you,
Tom

To be more specific:

If you type

./boinc_client -run_cpu_benchmarks

the client runs the benchmarks and then continues crunching.

Typing

./boinc_client -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu

attaches you to seti.
The client will ask for your ID (which has been mailed to you),
then downloads anything needed and starts crunching.

The other options are rather similar. I never needed them
until now, though...

Regards Hans

P.S: replace 'boinc_client' with the name of the boinc executable you
downloaded

Hi Hans
thanks for your help. I'm either not understanding your instructions, or my boinc setup has a problem. When I open the run box in redhat, I put in the ./boinc_client -run_cpu_benchmarks (with the correct client executable, I click on the box to run in terminal window, click "run" and I see a terminal window briefly flash on screen and disappear and nothing happens. Am I doing this correctly or do you think there is a problem with the program?

thanks,
Tom

Hans
I think I figured it out. I was able to get the -run_cpu_benchmarks to work. What is confusing me, though, (this linux box has dial-up access) is when the client finishes work and is not connected to the internet, it says it is deferring communication for a certain amount of time. If I close the program, then restart it with the -update_prefs command, the program restarts just fine, but it is still deferring communication. Is there a way to force it to update immediately as there is in the Windows gui version?

thanks,

Tom

Tom!

>I think I figured it out.

Fine :o)

I guess the client will contact seti immediately after restarting, when it runs out of work.

Is your dialup connection coming up automatically?

Then you could try

"ping setiathome.berkeley.edu"

first, and start the client when you see a response from seti.

Regards Hans

Hi Hans
thanks for all of your help. I was looking at some of the other posts in the forum, and it seems that the "deferring communication" problem is present with linux using the current client version. (so is the slow processing time, which I am also experiencing). I suppose I'll have to wait for the next version or the new gui interface that is being developed.

thanks,

Tom
