I originally joined the beta test..and had similar problems.. now, 2 weeks after the first wus were downloaded, i am still at 0 credit. I have crunched through 20+ wu's and still nothing. I havent got a clue whats going on..have detached and attached numerous times, all the usual things..Theres no way to check if any credit is pending, and no way to check on completed wu's next step is to uninstall and do some other form of distributed crunching. seti has far to many problems imho. sorry for the moan..it is justified though.. |

Hello, I think part of your problem is that you have been waiting for credit, and when it does not come in the timely manner that you expect, you either reset or detach and reattach. This actually prolongs you getting credits in a lot of ways. If you are crunching WU's that end in anything 3 and up, you are on the end line of processing so credit will usually show up in a few days. But during the times with the server down there were many people resetting their boxes which cause Wu's to be recycled and sent out again, thus prolonging the credit being issued. Just don't reset anymore, or detach anymore unless absolutely neccessary (ie: Total System Freeze, or all out of date WU's). Most back credits seemed to be pretty well caught up until the last Server problem over the weekend, ao they are probably Validating additional credits now. Just have patience my friend, credits will come! We all have had to wait from time to time. Have A Great Day And A Better Tomorrow! Regards, Rocky Follow this link for additional support! http://homepage.mac.com/pauldbuck/index.html PS, Keep in mind also that everytime you Detach and Reattach, you get a new Host ID, so as credits start rolling in, you will find yourself mergeing some of your computers. Just look to the message boards if you need any assistance. |

Just an observation.... From the SETI/BOINC home page, under your account, general preferences.... There is a setting that says "connect to project about every..." If you set this to a high value, BOINC will download lots of work, but it won't report the work units for a long time. If you set this short, you don't get as many work units, but they get reported more quickly. You get credit when two other crunchers return matching results, so yeah, credits can take a while. > I originally joined the beta test..and had similar problems.. > > now, 2 weeks after the first wus were downloaded, i am still at 0 credit. Yesterday I got 2000+ credits ... But, for the "server" I reattached 2 weeks ago ... still no new credits... I think they may still be 2 weeks (or so) behind. EdwardPF |

They have 3,000,000 work units in processing ... that includes all those issued and pending and those that have been completed and then reported. I know I got a little credit this week, but we are doing this for the science, credit is just frosting ... We can live on cake with no frosting for quite a long time ... Even if they did not have problems with the back end, you are still potentially looking ate nearly a month before you will start to see a very regular update in the bank balance. You have to process the WU and then two other people will have to do the same thing ... have you ever tried to get three different friends to pick a restaraunt? Without a 4 hour debate? :) Hang in there ... if you want quick gratiication, do LHC@Home, cp.net, or when they are back live and taking more participants, Predictor@Home. <p> For BOINC Documentaion: Click Me! |

This song is getting old. Here's why this happens. Someone sticky this so everyone will read it. The credit validator has a queue. So all the returned WUs are standing in a line, waiting to be validated. For the sake of this example, let's pretend the validator runs through one WU per day, and has 20 WUs in the cache. So, it'll look something like this: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST Now, you join in the project, and you upload a WU. Now the cache looks like this: ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTU ... where U represents your WU. Now, two weeks later, 14 WUs have been processed, and the cache looks like this: OPQRSTUVWXYZABCDEFGH So, 2 weeks into the project, you still haven't gotten any credit, but you get to read on the forums how everyone else is getting thousands of credits every day. However, notice that your WU is still in the cache, and getting closer to the front. Therefore, your credits will come, as soon as they're worked through the line. Not only that, they'll start coming on a regular basis since they started joining the queue on a regular basis. (And yes, this is a simplistic version of what happens, but it illustrates the point.) ------------------------------------ The game High/Low is played by tossing two nuclear warheads into the air. I only recently found the part of my account that lets me see how my credit was dished out.. I noticed that theres a lot of units that i was not granted any credit for (ones that are said to have been succesfull and even shows what credit i requested). just had a look at the postings and theres all the usual talk about it takes some time for other people to load-run-upload and then ill get the credit when seti gets around to it. WELL Thats all well and good to say and im sure it normaly correct but these ungranted credit WU's are spread out dating back months even. any explanations for this? just at a glance i'd say ive only got about 2/3rds of what i should have (at best) since the begining |

But there are two main reasons for not getting credit for a nominally successful work unit. One is an invalid result. That is a result that differs from the other two results (out of the three that are normally sent). The other is too many results -- if there are enough unreturned results (errors or no reply) that eight results are created, validation is skipped and nobody gets any credit. ------- Tom Gutman |

BOINC VALIDATOR and Credits CREDITS by PAUL From a post by Paul; From the "Rules and Policy" =============== Liability SETI@home and University of California assume no liability for damage to your computer, loss of data, or any other event or condition that may occur as a result of participating in SETI@home. Other BOINC projects Other projects use the same platform, BOINC, as SETI@home. You may want to consider participating in one or more of these projects. By doing so, your computer will do useful work even when SETI@home has no work available for it. These other projects are not associated with SETI@home, and we cannot vouch for their security practices or the nature of their research. Join them at your own risk. ============== From the Credit Page: Claimed credit is reported to a project when your computer communicates with its server. The granted credit that you receive may be different from the claimed credit, and there may be a delay of a few hours or days before it is granted. This is because some BOINC projects grant credit only after results have been validated. ================ From "Getting Started": Please keep in mind: There may be a delay of several days between when your computer reports a result and when it is granted credit for the result. Your User page shows you how much credit is 'pending' (claimed but not granted). The credit-granting process starts when your computer reports a result to the server (not when it finishes computing the result or uploading the output files). In rare cases (e.g. if errors occur on one or more computers) you may never receive credit for a computation. ================= There is no implied commitment by the developers of BOINC, any of the projects, or anyone else that this is a "risk free" environment. Nor that it is even worth your time. We are volunteers, they are trying to stay responsive to us, and to create a new environment for the pursuit of science. As much as I am unhappy with some of the day to day problems, we have come a long way from when I first participated in the BOINC Beta program (I came in after they had switched from the astropulse application to the SETI, for what that is worth, though BOINC insisted that the WU were AP's). Anyway, smile, it could be worse ... Semper Eadem So long Paul, it has been a hell of a ride. Park your ego's, fire up the computers, Science YES, Credits No. |

i Can understand some of the errors and problems with boinc... well..maybe not always understand but its part of the territory. heres a couple of things on the same route that baffle me.. 1st -what on earth is going on when it states "Outcome-Unknown" and "Client Error"? maybe a resend result option should be put in. 2nd -this got me totaly baffled, luckly ive only found a couple of these 102038 24 Jul 2004 1:02:11 UTC 4 Aug 2004 15:31:36 UTC Over Unknown New 0.00 0.00 0.00 320887 24 Jul 2004 1:01:55 UTC 2 Aug 2004 22:36:20 UTC Over Success Done 13,465.16 40.71 0.00 41212 5 Aug 2004 18:51:09 UTC 10 Aug 2004 4:54:18 UTC Over Unknown New 0.00 0.00 0.00 134000 10 Aug 2004 7:26:46 UTC --- Over No reply New 0.00 --- --- 139440 21 Aug 2004 4:02:57 UTC 28 Aug 2004 15:57:51 UTC Over Unknown New 0.00 0.00 0.00 206622 30 Aug 2004 19:11:14 UTC 31 Aug 2004 19:56:05 UTC Over Success Done 16,809.42 27.07 27.07 57921 1 Sep 2004 21:50:57 UTC 2 Sep 2004 14:52:30 UTC Over Success Done 12,819.63 37.24 27.07 http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=899227 as you can see some got the 'Unknown' but in this case 320887 succeeded just like the last two but no credit given? is anyone happy with this credit system? |

If you look at the Result ID details for 320887, you'll find that it's listed as "invalid"... any WU that is invalid (ie does NOT form a quarum) is not given any credit. From what I understand, SETI sends out 3 WUs and once 3 have been successfully returned, the validator checks to make sure that they got approximately the same results... two of them must be in agreement to give credit. Only those in agreement get credit. It means that sometimes we crunch and get nothing (which is sad), but overall, I don't really mind... it's not like I can DO anything with the credit... except brag about it =-) |
