Hi
I've tried to download the 4.09 file for linux, which on the ftp site shows 3.6mb, but when I download it, it is 9.02mb and will not gzip. Is the file corrupt and if so, where is a good copy?

thanks.

Hi
never mind. I had previously tried to download the file to my windows pc and then transfer it to my linux box. The file downloaded as 9.02mb, so I tried downloading it directly through dial-up on my linux box and it downloaded fine. I'm not too linux-literate, but is it not possible to download a .gz or *nix file to a pc and then transfer it?

Yes, provided that it is treated as a binary file!

Text files can get munged between Windows and unix/linux due to the different end-of-line chars used and also if there are missmatched char sets.

Good luck,

sure you can. just make sure that u are using binary transfer modes and not text modes. (as windows and unix uses different LF/CR)

Hi
thanks to all of you for your input. As mentioned, I did a direct download from dial-up on the linux box and it is up and running. I'll keep your points in consideration next time I download to my pc on dsl.
