I think Pikens is a real bright light in the tunnel. Here's an old oil man, a billionaire, willing to put his money and his reputation out there in hopes of a practical partial solution to a huge, immediate problem. There's nothing in it for him except to be remembered as someone who put his money where his mouth was and tried to help the country. At his age, with his money, he could live the rest of his life totally insulated from what's coming. But he's chosen a different course, it seems. Is the plan practical? Sure, especially as the price of oil keeps going up. I'll drive an LP-powered car in a heartbeat. "Good against remotes is one thing. Good against the living, that's something else." (Han Solo) |

I would like to see an all electric car approach... The world would be a much quieter place... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Briefly, electric power won't work for everything, batteries have a huge environmental impact, and the electricity has to come from somewhere. Solar and wind alone won't do it. There's no single, simple answer. "Good against remotes is one thing. Good against the living, that's something else." (Han Solo) |

Personally I love his plan. When I was in Utah we drove through some areas where--if they put 30-40 windmills, they could produce tremendous amounts of energy. They're desert but the crosswinds we experienced were phenomenal. |

Just another big ol' crook. Nancy Pelosi Invests In Energy Scheme and Water Grab By T. Boone Pickens August 11, 2008 William R. Collier Jr. Upadaria@yahoo.com The American Freedomist Nancy Pelosi may have an ulterior motive for opposing an ALL OF THE ABOVE energy plan, and for refusing to allow a vote on such a plan! An overlooked story last November shows that the T. Boone Pickens plan involves the private control of water, which Pickens wants to be able to sell to big cities via giant water pipelines which will be built on land seized under eminent domain. How did he do this? He did this by pushing through a “water district†which consists of only 8 acres of land and then applying eminent domain to expand that district and seize land from local ranchers which, in the end, puts vital water resources under his private control. The Sierra Club, which you might think has an opinion that means something to Nancy Pelosi who just wants to “save the worldâ€Â, had this to say, “We have real concerns about private control of water,†said Ken Kramer, director of the Texas Sierra Club. “Water is a resource, yet in some respects it is a commodity. It’s as essential to human life as air. That puts water in a different class.†Pickens plans to sell 200,000 acre-feet from parched West Texas Staked Plains annually. His plan is opposed by water policy planners as economically infeasible. This extensive extraction will affect natural spring flows and the rural Texas Panhandle communities that depend on that water. It will also adversely affect family farming and sustainable development from Texas to South Dakota, according to opponents. Pickens needs money and he has not been able to find investors to pay for a $110 Billion Bond he wants his new “water authority†to issue, therefore he is piggy-backing the windmill plan on to the water infrastructure development plan to use the money obtained for the wind farms in order to pay for the water infrastructure, which was his original goal. While these plans were in the works as of November 2007, with the creation of this “water districtâ€Â, the energy company, CLNE, was offered for public investment in an IPO in May of 2007, an IPO that was not advertised, but which resulted in Nancy Pelosi quickly jumping on board. Nancy Pelosi Purchased between $50,000-$100,000 in CLNE stock on May 25, 2007 apparently on it’s initial public offering. It is hard to tell if the water scheme is the device being used to seize the land or if the wind turbine scheme is the means by which he will fund the water scheme, but no matter what the case may be, Nancy Pelosi will personally profit from whatever he does as an investor. Nancy Pelosi is one of the richest members of Congress with a net worth of over US$25 million, which comes primarily from investments a large portfolio of jointly owned San Francisco Bay Area real estate, and, now, of course, stocks in CLNE. While the stock was initially offered at $14 and is now valued below that amount, the low of $10 in early July of this year is bouncing back, especially in light of ads by Pickens and growing consensus that the Pickens plan will gain support, especially if Pelosi is firmly behind it. Pelosi and pals COULD be hoisted on theiir own petard if new rules THEY pushed go into effect. |

Pickens owns extensive Natural gas assets and Gas refueling stations. The price of Natural gas would skyrocket if demand grew due to extensive use of motor fuel--we couldn't afford to heat our homes. see my thread in the Science-non-Seti board. Bill |

Others have been building windmills for a thousand years. Look at Holland where they pumped with windmills for almost ten centuries. Now all the countries that touch the North sea are full of really big wind mills. Denmark makes very good power heads and sells them around the world. They make a significant portion of all electricity using wind. Move SW and the same for Germany, a bit further and Holland is full of wind power plants. I have been investing in power companies that build wind farms for more than a dozen years. One, based in Florida has more wind power than any other US company. Ironically none are in Florida as the wind in state is not suitable for these generation towers. Two other companies, one of which I have owned for thirty five years are part nuclear, part hydro-electric and starting wind farms. So Mr. Pickens is a bit late out of the gate. Many years ago an attempt to exploit wind power in California got the shysters out to build a bunch of power generators with blades. Got huge government subsidies. Poor equipment design and all that is left is a bunch of eyesores that still don't work. At home we have used the spiral low power lamps in every socket in the house except for the micro-wave, oven, ice box and one attic lamp that is used less than an hour a year. And we drive a hybrid car. On the car we got the tax credit, that is no longer available, That helped offset the federal tax bill. With a fuel efficient car, the small amount we drive means we buy less than a tank a month. And we walk to stores and nearby destinations, use a two wheel bike for medium distances and car when needed for large loads. When we worked we rode bikes about 7.5 miles each day each way in decent weather. Good exercise without gym charges. And zero gasoline used. Only fuel was a half a beer at dinner, for us not the bike! All our windows are double layer glass so the thermal losses are halved from this change. If they only had a good supplier of three layer glass, it would have been better. A setback thermostat allows us to keep track of both heating a cooling use. How? It count the on time for replacement of tilter. Since that is also either the Air conditioner on time or burner time, it enables us to keep track of energy use. Winter setting is 68 F and summer is 80 F. A but more clothes in winter, and less in summer. One does not need to wait for billion plus dollar tycoons to save the planet. It can start at home. On the other hand don't expect to build off Cape Cod, it might interfere with the summer sailing off shore. Ironic isn't it! duke |

Australia already has LPG infrastructure all over and has dedicated LPG vehicles. For example this Ford (see options) and the GM for dual fuel. In 2 years time LNG will be starting to replace diesel in trucks in Tasmania. See this link. Paul (S@H1 8888) And proud of it! |
