Characteristics of the WOW! Signal

I was wondering does anyone know if the WOW! signal recorded in 1977 has been rated with a score value in spikes, gaussians, pulse and triplets, like the data eleborated from Seti@Home? And if so, what are these values? I'm just curious to know how much strong a score should be for a probable alien signal. Right now for my data, I'm getting gaussians from 0.8 to 3.8. Thanks to all. |

First, it's important to know that the Big Ear Radio Observatory was a much less technologically advanced device than Arecibo, or other radio telescopes. Basically, the BERO was listening to the sky, and printing out the signal strength in numbers/letters. The lowest signal was represented by a 1, and moving up the scale it goes 2, 3, 4, etc, and after 9 it goes A, B, C, etc. The WOW signal appeared as 6EQUJ5 on the printout. As for gaussian scores or other stuff like that, you can't really figure that out for lack of data. However, we do know that the signal strength, at it's peak (U) was 30 to 31 times stronger than the background noise. Also, the signal strength rose and fell in a gaussian-like curve that would be expected of a signal from deep space. I'm really tired and I'm sure that I'm not making complete sense here but I hope that helps. |

I found it interesting, yet I couldn't guess how much is the power of this signal. Is that expressed as times the floor noise? |

As mentioned in an article on planetary.org, the signal is somewhat inaccurate rendered. The original signal didn't contain enough data to make, for example, a gaussian fit. (As far as I have understood). Only the spikes a correct. I remember to have read, the signal is about 30-60 times the background noise. Some of the spikes SETI@home reports are in the same category. |
