Not quite shure why, but whenever I run Boinc on my new Dell Pentium 4 3.4 with 1GB memory it crashes. It can happen sometimes on just the main setting screen or more often than not when it switches to the screensaver, either into it or exiting it. I have it run based on prefrences which it wont do work when I'm working, and it normally won't crash then. I switched it to process one work unit at a time thinking that might resolve it but nope iti didn't. I was almost thinking graphics card incompatibility, but like I said it crashes when in menu, and I fully have to reboot, all keys are locked.
Help for I'd like to get SETI going on the computer I run the most, and get my score back up there.

ok first of all, this should be in the question and problems forum, but i'll forgive you ;). second, we need to know your OS, SP's, prefs, anything you can give us about your specs.

Thats what I thought also, but kept reading the Windows 98 crashing problem also here in this section, plus I thought it had something to do with numbercrunching freezing my computer. Hey I've been a member since 99 so u better forgive me HAHA

I tried the alpha versions and got the same result, crash. I'll try the suspended application a try.

Just for fun, check that you do not have your Screensaver password protected or resume to Welcome Screen.

I have the same here without problems. I installed Boinc AFTER I installed SP2. Some others have had SP2 and I wonder if overlaying SP2 on top of Boinc causes it to fail. Have you tried a complete new install of Boinc?

Download Knoppix and burn a CD.

Then run Knoppix from the CD as an overlay
over Windows.

It will confirm whether the problem is hardware
or software.

I just installed SP2 on my p4 1.8 last night and no problems, running 1 gig, ver4.08. A long shot would be drivers and BIOS, or maybe heat, or memory......

Step 4. Run Boinc under wine (use the 'create a fake windows file', it works better)

Step 5. Install linux while your computer crunches with knoppix.

on the non joking side.. knoppix 3.6 comes with Memtest86.
memory issues don't show up until you actually USE that memory.

There's hardware test tools out there mentioned by overclocker sites to verify that systems work ok.
The graphics for the screensaver is opengl and done by your video card.. so if the card is broken, running a tool to test it may help.

Windows XP SP2 and Norton Internet Security 2004 on A Dell does not play well together.
The combo does not let the computer connect to the internet. It work ok untill another update after SP 2[SP3]. Disable the Norton fire wall and it connect OK. Uninstall SP 2 and everthing work OK.
This was any connection to the internet. Boinc was not installed on this computer.
Go ahead and try it, you can always uninstall SP 2.
Do you have a fire wall?
What other programs are running?

OK tried the part with 'no suspended applications will consume swap space' tested quick and seemed ok quick being 20 seconds. That's normally how long it takes, so we'll see when I come back from lunch. I have Mcafee Firewall and virus protection , and no problem connecting or for that matter getting workunits. Tried installing Boinc after SP2, in fact my 1.8 P4 desktop runs fine with SP2, I just have this feeling its with the processor or memory. If still doesnt work i assume Knoppix is readily availible?

All seemed to be good when I let Boinc run, but after 45 minutes and some seconds the application froze. I don't think it is the graphics card, I played Star Wars Galaxies when I got home for 1 1/2 hours and it was fine, but I'll find this Knoppix i guess...

I'm thinking perhaps the cpu is overheating while crunching data? Check the cpu fan and/or cpu temp with motherboard monitor.

Well it looks like it was overheating of the graphics card, fans were running too slow. Dell sent me a new laptop and knock on plastic, it seams to be runnig smooth.
