Message 562271 - Posted: 7 May 2007, 16:33:34 UTC - in response to Message 562196.

Helios is totally Greek. The Romans called the Sun "Sol" from which the designation "Sol system" in many scifi shows originates. The name Helios is the current word for Sun in Greek even today. In Italian the name for the sun is "sole".
I am half-greek half-italian, and live in Athens Greece.

Sol is the word in spanish AND in portuguese, SOLar system was that what you meant right?

Hate to rain on the parade, but the plan is to put the old disks (boot drives and all) into the new system when it arrives. It's like a brain transplant. If all goes well the machine will come up thinking it is "thumper". And so the name of the new system will be... "thumper."

Hi Matt,

I very very appreciate the brain transplant !!!!
I know it will be very very difficult.

Can I suggest something ???
To open a new post, but on read only for us. So we will know the evolution.
I hope soon, we will be able to " surcharge " the scheduler !!!
It will have a lot of work !!

And to remove the limitation on the amount downloadable WU by day by user. Not forget there are a lot who works with a lot of workstation but using only one to distribute work to their Intranet.

Of course, it is not the priority at this time.
I wish you and all the team my best.

Actually, Kronos might be better (or just Saturn). Otherwise known as the "first/best sun," if you want to get into mythology... Granted Helios is "better known," but Kronos/Saturn was "the first / the best / the primeval ruler of the heavens." Of course Kronos sounds cooler. ;o]

Actually, Uranus and Gaia were first born of Chaos. Kronos was a Titan and father to Zeus and most of the Olympian gods.

No, I meant that sometimes when in scifi shows they refer to our solar system, they name it "Sol system" and the sun is sometimes named "Sol". Have seen/heard it a number of times. Also solar and all derivations of solar come from the Latin word "Sol" which as you said is the word for sun in spanish and portuguese even today.

The only issue the system MAY have is if any SW is keyed to the old servers HOSTID. BUT, that can be corrected (If the hardware is identical) by putting the NVRAM of the dead thumper into the new system.

Might not need to be identical, just close enough to power up to the OBP "OK" prompt to where they can flash the OBP from floppy, or close enough to allow it to boot, and flash the OBP from Solaris.

Hopefully, they don't have to go such a route though.

As far as I know, they shouldn't have any software tied to the serial number or anything. I have a couple of older SPARCengine Ultra-AXi boxes, and I'm not sure how much more time the freaking RTC/nvram battery will last, but I do have instructions on how to replace it and reprogram a new one with the old info. It's not that hard to do, so, if that works, I doubt if anything is tied to the nvram id, and if it is, I'd have a problem Sun, personally. Anyone who uses such RTC/NVRAM units with encapsulated batteries with no means for applying external batteries doesn't intend their hardware to last more than a decade in any use.

Thanks a lot, works again.

Regards,
Iztok

For others: it is SONCE on every planet where they speak slovenian.

A bit offtopic:

Statistcs are down, including:
- xml export not updated
- stats pages here not updated
- SETI@home server status information: most numbers are old

Individual stats via account information are OK.

All was OK few days after Thumper took vacations, so it might be just some
hanging/killed script somewhere?

Good luck with new Sun box!
(Old thumper might be great as disk-less box, if it is not replacement).

"Helio" in Spanish is helium, so "helios" would be heliums. Back about late 1958 or early 1959 my brothers and I saw a movie called "Kronos". It was a space horror movie about a giant robot goin' around destroying big buildings, etc. here on Earth. Along with that, that night, was another movie called "She Devil" about a girl named Accura whose wounds healed in several seconds. I don't remember what horrors she did.

http://www.kronia.com/thoth/thoth10.txt

The first article therein is enlightening from a mythological point of view. The second and third are on other subjects, though the second is interesting (re: electric comets).

“Interesting” in same the way that mental illness is, I guess … Velikovsky’s horse has been dead for fifty years—if it was ever alive—but that doesn’t stop some from continuing to beat it. At least his mythology was a little better than his physics. Cf. C.G. Jung’s discussion of the Black Sun in the context of alchemy.

From the above site’s mission statement: “We have initially narrowed our focus to supporting a reconstruction of recent planetary dislocations that ended a universally remembered ‘Golden Age’.” ’Nuff said.

Hi Matt, woaoo, there's a lot of discussion in tis message board about a new name for the new server. I think "thumper" must continue working. As far as I can see its only a lot of new HW comming in. And all the comments about "Sol": This name of the sun is used in all nordic countries (i.e Scandinavia and more) and also used in almost all latin countries.

best regs and good luck

Wasn't sure where else to mention this, but the link to the technical news in the News section of the main page, May 7th entry, has a mistake in it, or rather an extra bit...

If you haven't read the front page news, Sun is coming through with a replacement science database server (yay!) which will be arriving Monday afternoon.

More on this later (or read previous threads to find out more information about the outage).

- Matt

Hurrah to Sun...One caviat, though.
You may want to test each drive on a seperate
controller..if there in an ELECTRICAL problem in a drive that took out Thumper's controller, you will want to know this BEFORE you fire up the Sun.
You really don't want a recurrence due to a shorted drive..
