Hiya. I've told Admiral Marith about the recent responses. He will post
shortly. We both live in Minneapolis - he had a break-in and the laptop
was the only item stolen although a DVD recorder had been placed in an
odd place so my guess is the person took the first easily pawnable item
and ran like a fool.

I hope they get the guy - if they haven't reimaged the machine the
evidence is clear to see.

That's why I password secure the bios, boot from HD only, and use a password for Windows. Any crack head that breaks into my place won't be any to pawn any of my computers, because they couldn't show the pawn shop that it works. And they couldn't wipe the OS. Sure, someone with the correct knowledge and equipment could flash the bios, but most thieves aren't that smart, nor do they have the time. All they could possibilly do is sell it for parts, and used at that, and you know what prices those bring.

Ah whoops. I got mixed up with who was saying what there with the Ireland comment. I think it was late when I made that post :)

Dogbytes, all it takes is a screwdriver to get in the case and maybe a pair of pliers to reset the bios jumper... but yeah you are right that most common thieves probably wouldn't have the patience to figure that out. If only they would have the decency to return it once they found out it was worthless to them...

It's kinda like those steering wheel locks, it will only slow down a committed thief...however, amateurs always look for the easiest thing, so it does act as a deterrent. Nothings perfect, but prudence dictates that one make things as hard as possible to vex the bastards.

Wife's laptop was stolen and It sent results yesterday. If I can find out what IP address it used, the cops might be able to retireve it

Wow, it sounds like you guys did this without me. It's not the first time that SETI@home was used to track a stolen laptop. If you have the aprroximate time of the last contact (or if you give me the host ID number), I can look in the logs to see if there is any more information. But beyond the IP address, which you already have, there's probably not much in there.

Eric

Wow, I would indeed use that info to generate some publicity - you really need it in the actual situation. If a laptop has been located and regained with the help of SAH the suggestion of John is a good way to get some attention, new users and hence more donations (I posted something similar in the donations-thread). It's pretty obvious that you guys over there don't have the time to do much marketing or presswork, but maybe the community can help with it or we even have some editors reading the boards...

Yeah, the address in the whois lookup will be whatever address was registered by the entity that owns the IP - probably their corporate headquarters. But a reverse DNS lookup yields this hostname:

207-224-73-215.mpls.qwest.net

which is presumably a subscriber in Minneapolis as Dark Angel pointed out.

So you are in Ireland and your laptop is in Minnesota? It gets around!

Good luck!

No, I am not in Ireland. I am not even remotely close. I'm in Minneapolis.

There's been a second connect, and I have the Minneapolis Cops working on it, but I'm gonna take all the advice in here that everyone has suggested, and see what I can come up with.

There was another contact episode on January 8th at 06:53:53 UTC.

This is the information

IP address 192.168.0.5
(same the last 272 times)
External IP address 71.210.178.40

Different IP on connect #2 than on the first one. Still an address owned by qwest. Still using the wireless card.

Multiple ip address can be a good thing if the ISP can say they assigned to the same customer or building.

You may also want to change to preferences associated to that laptop to
Connect to network about every .25 days. Yes 0.25 that way it might contact seti@home more often and give you more "here I am" reports to make it easier to find the person(s).

I am not sure that I can do that as I don't think it's set up to be administered remotely for seti. If you have a clue mallet to smack with so I can know HOW to do that, I will certainly try. It was network always available and run always last I* touched it.

It would be under your account preferences. Go to General preferences. Change the setting for the location the laptop is associated to (work, home, school, etc). If you do not know the location or want to change it the location change is at the bottom of the screen with your computer info. The next time the laptop connects to seti it will update automatically.
