If I can find out what IP address it used, the cops might be able to retireve it Assuming that it was sending back results to your account, you should be able to do this yourself (you can see the information, but other users cannot). Go to your account, click on view computers. Click on the specific computer. Click on view IP address (near the top). I hope that you get the machine back. ![]() ![]() BOINC WIKI |

Admiral, go to this site and type in the address number into the search. All the detail is there. how to complain and e-mail address's also http://www.arin.net/whois/ Remember, this will only tell you who the service provider is. But they know the home address of the ip number ![]() |

207.224.73.215 traced to: 207-224-73-215.mpls.qwest.net Yep, Denver. But you could be living thousands of miles away and using them as your service provider. But your culprit probally lives there. Local phone company. Its exciting, we need the Admiral to keep us up to date with the cops ![]() |

Front page headline in the newspapers and on the tv Americas Dumbest Criminals seti@home foiled the Laptop theif No kidding, it could be a great publicity stunt to raise public awareness of this project. At just the right time to help with the fund raiseing. ![]() |

Wife's laptop was stolen and It sent results yesterday. If I can find out what IP address it used, the cops might be able to retireve it Wow, it sounds like you guys did this without me. It's not the first time that SETI@home was used to track a stolen laptop. If you have the aprroximate time of the last contact (or if you give me the host ID number), I can look in the logs to see if there is any more information. But beyond the IP address, which you already have, there's probably not much in there. Eric @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) ![]() |

Front page headline in the newspapers and on the tv Me too Michael. If they get the thief i'll be contacting Irish and British newspapers and TV aswell to see if they are interested in the story. I would love to see this project get a boost. It would be realy good publicity. Never know, I might pick up a member or 2 for my team out of it! ![]() |

Yeah, the address in the whois lookup will be whatever address was registered by the entity that owns the IP - probably their corporate headquarters. But a reverse DNS lookup yields this hostname: 207-224-73-215.mpls.qwest.net which is presumably a subscriber in Minneapolis as Dark Angel pointed out. So you are in Ireland and your laptop is in Minnesota? It gets around! Good luck! A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |

I'm following this too. We had a team member a couple of years back that got his laptop back the same way, with the cops tracing the IP returned by his SETI client running hidden as a service. Edit: Same member got a client's PC back the same way with BOINC after an employee "misplaced" it. Join Team Starfire BOINC Chat |

Also, in both instances, Scott had given the information to the investigating officers, who quickly used the IP address to track down the suspect. Just give your investigating officer a call, they'll be thrilled to solve one so easily. Team Starfire World BOINC IRC- irc//irc.teamstarfire.net:6667/team_starfire ![]() |

My VisualRoute tool also shows that the actual trace route ends in Minneapolis. QWest's administrative office is at 1801 California Street in Denver, Colorado, though. That may explain Misfit's Denver Whois finding. I think the person in possession is in the St. Paul - Minneapolis twin cities area. And yes, that IS a long way from Ireland, which makes me think: Maybe the thief sold it on eBay and shipped it? It's a possible lead. Maybe the police could contact eBay and see if anyone recently sold a laptop from a seller in Ireland to a purchaser in Minneapolis-St.Paul's? These two email addresses may be helpful for you, or for the police: http://abuse@qwest.net http://ipadmin@qwest.com Good Luck! :) |

Admiral Marith, is the guy who has this issue. And he's an american. I'm only doing some commenting on it, maby to help him get it back. ME, inocent until proven guilty. Ever the airlines will back me up to say that i have not been doing any flying lately. And i'm on the same rubbish computer for yonks. The conclusion to this thread will come from "Admiral Marith". Does anyone know how we can contact him to find out if he got it back. That's the deal clincher here. ![]() |
