Is there a list of error codes somewhere for BOINC?

I've just installed 4.05 on 10.2. Seti@home isn't providing wus at the moment, so I logged into climate predictor. It downloaded a work unit immediately, but after two seconds it reported "Unrecoverable error for result ... (process got signal 5)"

Since I just went through a lot to get BOINC running on my MAC, I'm wondering if the problem is on my end, or on their end.

Can't answer the question but would like to know where you got 4.05 from because I can't find it to download.

A post at climatepredictor.net states that they are not supporting OSX versions previous to 10.3. That is why the "Signal 5" error message occured (I'm running 10.2).

Is this also true of seti or predictor?

I am running Boinc 4.05 on OS 10.2.8 without any problems. Version 3.20
Wasn't working but V.4 is OK you just need to replace the SETI worker.

First download BOINC 4.05 and run it. Go to the following link it will
download the .sit file witch contain a compiled SETI version.

http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc-seti10.2.8.sit

After extracting you will see a Boinc program file. Ignore it.
browse thru the PROJECTS / SETI folder you have just extracted and
copy the two files (seti 3.10 and app_info.xml)in the
BOINC / PROJECTS / SETI folder

It should work fine.

Hope it helped
Friendly
Marc

Merci Beaucoup Marc!

I just got BOINC 4.05 running, and it downloaded Seti WUs (I detached from climatepredictions). But it didn't announce it was beginning computation. I did as you so kindly instructed: after I a ^C I restarted BOINC, it told me it was "resuming" computation on a wu.

Next I want BOINC to run in the background as long as the machine is on, even if I didn't start the process using terminal, and if possible, even if no one is logged in. Can this be done? I found some instructions for this at the bottom of

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?s=53d48971a0f4a3858029cae12d7d2c94&threadid=219776

I followed those instructions, but ProcessViewer is telling me BOINC isn't using any CPU time.

You can run SETI in the background using SetiControl, a freeware program which you can get through version tracker. This is also very useful as it tells you how far you've got through the WU and gives you the 'best' gaussian, spike, pulse and triplet. It's the closest to a GUI that us Maccies have available!

Hope this helps.

I installed SetiControl, and it is telling me that BOINC/Seti is running (the % sign is black) but it obviously isn't (it doesn't budge from 0%).

No error messages that I can find.

I was just given the job of supervising 15 I-Books. These I-Books sit idle much of the time. I want to get them doing something, but I'm surprised at and dissapointed with how difficult it is to get UNIX-BOINC up and running on MACs!

I'm about to give up.

How do you have your SetiControl preferences set? They should be something like this: /Applications/setiathome-BOINC/boinc_4.05_powerpc-apple-darwin , depending on where you've installed BOINC. If it's not pointing to the correct file it still says SETI is running when it obviously isn't!

I've posted a message in the Wish List forum for Macs to have a proper graphical interface. It's about time they had one for SETI BOINC, otherwise they're going to lose a lot of Mac people from the project.

That seems to be fine. I replaced the long name that ends with "darwin" to a simple "boinc." But I had also corrected that in the settings for SetiControl.

Well, I don't need a GUI, but I do need honest instructions from BOINC. The instructions BOINC provides are truncated to the point of parody. For example the final instruction is to "run BOINC." I struggled for a few hours with that, probing the MAC bulletin boards until I discovered that one occasionally needs to type "./boinc" to begin executing a file named "boinc." Nor do they warn anyone that they will need to download a special, off-site version to run on OS 10.2.

So I don't think you are going to get far with that "Wish." Those folks don't want to make it easier to work with MACs. If they did they would be doing so many of these easy, little things that would help right now. In their planning MAC users are an after-thought.

I'd hardly used Terminal at all till I needed it for running BOINC, so I definitely agree that the instructions given are less than helpful. I got SETI BOINC running properly by trial and error and looking through these forums. As you say, there are basic instructions missing.

As for the 'Wish', I realise Maccies are well down on the priority list but I thought I'd mention it as there was nothing else on the first page of any forum complaining about the lack of a Mac GUI, though I've seen several pleas for one over the time it has been running!
