Can I set preferences differently for one machine with 2GB memory and lots of disk space, and another with 256MB memory and even more disk space?

I would have searched the FAQ for this but I was daunted by the 22 pages and no search facility.

Yes, its fairly easy. On Your Account page you should see General preferences view or edit, click that.
In there you'll be able to setup 3 "venues" of Home, Work & School
Change the settings of 2 of them as you want, then go into each of your computers settings (via view computers, computer ID from Your Account) and assign each computer to the relevant venue (at the bottom of the page).

If you run multiple projects on those two machines, you can also set similar venues for the resource shares, under SETI@home preferences control View or edit.
