I am the Web Coordinator for the College of Law at Georgia State University. We have had several reports from people who cannot connect to our website. I need as many people as possible to take a few minutes and check to see if they can reach the site. I've set up a page on my personal site at http://earldaniels.net/index/dns/ where the results of your checks can be posted.

As an incentive, I am personally giving away two $25 gift certificates from Amazon.com to two randomly-picked respondents (this will save me a LOT more than $50 worth of hassle in finding and proving the problem!!)

If you don't want to use the page above, basically what I need is to know if you can access:
http://law.gsu.edu/home.php
or the same page by IP #:
http://131.96.183.4/home.php

and the copy/paste results from these two checks (run from a DOS prompt):
nslookup law.gsu.edu

and
tracert 131.96.183.4

This can be e-mailed to the temporary address:
check@earldaniels.net

Please, no responses after next Wednesday, October 12, 2005. If we haven't figured it out by then, I'll give up!!

Thanks in advance for your help,
Peace,
- Earl

p.s. Please, no critiques of the site... I've only been responsible for it for two weeks!!

All sites are available to me.

Might this be your problem:

Web sites hosted by Level 3 data centers cannot be reached by Cogent Customers and vice-versa. This accounts for some outages of popular web sites. It has nothing to do with site content, but rather corporate children throwing a temper tantrum.

Google it for more info.

You want us to spam these sites because? The college has Network Engineers that are quite capable of troubleshooting problems of this nature. If you really are the Web Coordinator for GSU Law then tell them and let them do their jobs.

I do suspect that they will find that Mrs. ANON is correct Level 3 seems to want to alienate all the other ISPs, ILECs and CLECs.. A position they really don't want to be in..

I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue.

I appreciate the feedback, but not the cynicism. I am the coordinator for a College within a University (If I need to prove this, contact me via the web site). Like most Universities, we have fairly autonomous Colleges, sharing only the basic infrastructure. I can't (yet) prove it's the University's problem, hence, the data collection. In fact, they don't (yet) believe there's a problem, but several (otherwise reasonable) law professors and even more law students have told us the problem exists. The problem(s) started before the Level3/Cogent spat (before i became the coordinator). On top of this, our statewide PeachNet has backbone connections to BOTH Level3 and Cogent, although this does not preclude a given route to go through both networks.

I am not asking you to SPAM any site. I'm asking you to visit a page on a different site (since I'm most interested in those who can't reach the college's site) and enter a bit of information that takes about 2 minutes to collect and post. If i get enough information to solve the problem, it will be well worth the $50 bucks I'm putting up. You don't even have to give me your e-mail address (read the instructions).
