On every boinc app, including setiathome, I get an invalid memory reference error (xxx referenced location ... ) after the screensaver has been running for a while.

I also have this specific seti@home error in the messages:

9/30/2005 3:32:22 PM|SETI@home|Unrecoverable error for result 08oc03aa.29740.23648.447140.112_4 ( - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))

This is both on windows xp sp2 and on windows 2000

Any idea what's wrong?

Check here in the wiki for clues: Your error message.

Then leave a message if you are overclocking, if you have everything up to date and if it happened before. You probably need to update your videocard drivers if it happens on screensaver action. Make sure OpenGL is active.

Unfortunately, I'm not overclocking, my video drivers are up to date, and open gl is active - at least other opengl screensavers work.

This doesn't happen right away, usually takes 20 minutes to several hours.

Happens on my laptop with win2000/ati gfx and my deskside with win xp and nvidia gfx!

There's a known, long-standing problem with ATI video cards, which they may have finally beat with the upcoming 5.x.x versions. Short term work around is to not use BOINC as your screen saver. When the upgrade is released, give it a try. Or, if you're adventurous, it's available as beta version 5.1.5, not in final form yet.

A lot of people, including myself, recommend not using the 3D screen savers during project processing, as it takes a lot of processing away from the project. Plus there have been some known issues. Using a basic screen saver (my favorite is BLANK), is just fine, no realy processing power taken away from your projecct, and everything remains happy.

I would suggest trying this, and see if you still have problems. If so, then it's time for a Memtest86 and Prime95 tests. These will find problems in your computer(s) and help figure out what you may need to go get fixed.

Where can I get the beta 5.1.5?

This happens w/ nvidia gfx as well as ATI, so there may be a more generic problem.

The download directory is here. Note, not a lot of documentation, even by BOINC standards, and use at your own risk. I do see that they've put up the 5.1.6 version today. Good luck!

5.1.6 is a lot more stable than 5.1.5 was. Look at the version details before you use it. Also know that not all projects have changed to server 5 code yet, so not all projects can download work units.
