The current UOTD, Mitsutaka Nakamura, has this in his profile:

-----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK-----

Version: 3.1

GCS/ED$/J/LS/S d++(-) s: a32 C++ UL++ P--- L++ E--- W++ N++ o? K w O-- M+

V- PS+ PE++ Y+ PGP++ t+ 5? X- R- !tv b++ DI+ D G e+++ h r++>+++ y+

------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------

Is this real or just made up?

Yours, curiously.

Thanks TS and NA.

I guess the UOTD wanted to befuddle us with some sort of encryption code rather than computer code.

Well, haven't seen anyone with a geek code block in years.

Geek code was used in a lot of folks' e-mail signatures to imply how well-hearsed they were in certain aspects of the use of computers (such as how well they understand programming, encryption, different operating systems, and the like) as well as indicating their level of education and some of their interests (including in certain tv shows... the "5?" in the last line of the block refers to the user not having a clue about the show "Babylon 5" and the "X-" after that indicates that he doesn't like "X-Files").

It's fallen by the wayside for years now. (Now I feel old!)

Found a decoder here

Apparently

GCS/ED$/J/LS/S d++(-) s: a32 C++ UL++ P--- L++ E--- W++ N++ o? K w O-- M+

V- PS+ PE++ Y+ PGP++ t+ 5? X- R- !tv b++ DI+ D G e+++ h r++>+++ y+

Means:-

GEEK TYPE CODE [GCS/ED$/J/LS/S]
Geek of Computer Science, Geek of Education Getting paid for it!, Geek of Jurisprudence (Law), Geek of Library Science, Geek of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.).

GEEK DRESS CODE [d++(-)]
My tendencies on this issue range from: "I tend to wear conservative dress such as a business suit or worse, a tie.", to: "I'm usually in jeans and a t-shirt."

GEEK SHAPE CODE [s:]
I'm an average geek.

GEEK AGE CODE [a32]
I am 32 years old.

GEEK COMPUTERS CODE [C++]
Computers are a large part of my existence. When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is log myself in. I play games or mud on weekends, but still manage to stay off of academic probation.

GEEK UNIX CODE [UL++]
I use GNU/Linux exclusively. I've get the entire admin ticked off at me because I am always using all of the CPU time and trying to run programs that I don't have access to. I'm going to try cracking /etc/passwd next week, just don't tell anyone.

GEEK PERL CODE [P---]
Perl combines the power of sh, the clarity of sed, and the performance of awk with the simplicity of C. It should be banned.

GEEK GNU/LINUX CODE [L++]
I use GNU/Linux ALMOST exclusively on my system. I've given up trying to achieve GNU/Linux.God status, but welcome the OS as a replacement for DOS. I only boot to DOS to play games.

GEEK EMACS CODE [E---]
Emacs sucks! vi forever!!!

GEEK WORLD WIDE WEB CODE [W++]
I have a homepage. I surf daily. My homepage is advertised in my .signature.

GEEK USENET CODE [N++]
I read all the news in a select handful of groups.

GEEK USENET ORACLE CODE [o?]
Usenet Oracle? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK KIBO CODE [K]
I know who Kibo is.

GEEK MICROSOFT WINDOWS CODE [w]
Ok, so I use MS Windows, I don't have to like it.

GEEK OS/2 CODE [O--]
I can't even get the thing to install!

GEEK MACINTOSH CODE [M+]
A Mac has it's uses and I use it quite often.

GEEK VMS CODE [V-]
Unix is much better than VMS for my computing needs.

GEEK POLITICS & SOCIAL ISSUES CODE [PS+]
My whole concept of liberalism is that nobody has the right to tell anybody else what to do, on either side of the political fence. If you don't like it, turn the bloody channel.

GEEK POLITICS & ECONOMIC ISSUES CODE [PE++]
Keep the government off the backs of businesses. Deregulate as much as possible.

GEEK CYPHERPUNKS CODE [Y+]
I have an interest and concern in privacy issues, but in reality I am not really all that active or vocal.

GEEK PGP CODE [PGP++]
I have the most recent version and use it regularly.

GEEK STAR TREK CODE [t+]
It's a damn fine TV show and is one of the only things good on television any more.

GEEK BABYLON 5 CODE [5?]
Babylon 5? I don't even know what that is...

GEEK X FILES CODE [X-]
It's ok if you like paranoia and conspiracy stories, but, let's face it, it's crap.

GEEK ROLE-PLAYING CODE [R-]
Gosh, what an utter waste of time!

GEEK TELEVISION CODE [!tv]
I do not own a television.

GEEK BOOKS CODE [b++]
I find the time to get through at least one new book a month.

GEEK DILBERT CODE [DI+]
I read Dilbert daily, often understanding it.

GEEK DOOM CODE [D]
I've played the game and I'm pretty indifferent.

THE GEEK CODE [G]
I know what the geek code is and even did up this code.

GEEK EDUCATION CODE [e+++]
Got a Masters degree.

GEEK HOUSING CODE [h]
Friends come over to visit every once in a while to talk about Geek things. There is a place for them to sit.

GEEK RELATIONSHIPS CODE [r++>+++]
I've dated my current S.O. for a long time. But someday I'd like to say: "Found someone, dated, and am now married."

GEEK SEX CODE [y+]
Male. I've had real, live sex.

So there you have it, I even found a site where you can even have your very own geek code compiled.

Back to you

I live in Vancouver, and since JMS has been up here filming <I>Jeremiah</I>, the local SF convention was able to snag him as a guest for a few hours. He gave a wonderful talk on his experiences making B5 (and trying to get it made in the first place!) and then spent two hours signing autographs. Wonderful, very personable guy.

Hi Raven,

I've yet to see Jeremiah (not sure if it's been shown in the UK).

I'm still gutted that they cancelled Crusade, just as it was getting (more) interesting!
