The old version of Seti@home, although it would sit in the system task tray, would not run your CPU if you were using the computer. It worked perfectly and never came on while I was working; only when the screensaver went on, which in my case is 5 minutes of idle time. I just installed BOINC and it is running my 3.2ghz HT cpu at 100% pegged all the time. I want BOINC to ONLY consume cpu cycles while the screensaver is on. How do I do this short of removing the BOINC sys tray? This is a critical concern as I don't want to share my CPU while I am working. I hope that this can be resolved as I will have to resort to uninstalling the software if I can't correct this. Thanks in advance |

There is a setting in the general preferences area of your account on the web site. From the home page http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/ click on "Your Account". Under Preferences, find General. Next to that is a "View / Edit". Click on that, click on "Edit". Change the setting "Do work while the computer is in use" to No. Save the change. Update from the client. If you need different settings for different groups of machines, you have 3 sets to use. Home, Work and School. Since this is a general setting, each machine group gets one setting for all projects. jm7 |

BOINC is also pretty good at relinquishing CPU cycles to any other process that requires it. For this reason, I don't even bother with the "Do work while..." preference. I have it always running. Been using it this way for months and don't see any slowdowns, even while playing games. :) |

I am having the same issue as well. 100% cpu even while working. I have changing this setting as you have suggested, to run only when the computer is not in use, with no success. I have updated from the client, closed and restarted BIONIC, and rebooted the computer. Still with no luck. It remains pegged at 100% all the time. Any other ideas? |

> There is a setting in the general preferences area of your account on the web > site. But, both my general and specific home settings have "NO" to the question "Do work while computer is in use?" Yet, BOINC is running continuously....and because this is Windows...even though it is running at LOW, the machine is pretty unusable. Though I do know it is using my "home" settings, because I in the "general" settings max cpus is set to 1...while under "home" it is set to 2. So it is running two.... Are you looking at (tab) 'Projects' (item) 'Resource Share' in the BOINC client, or 'CPU Usage' under the Windows Task Manager? If your looking at the BOINC client, it shows that 100% of your resourced USED will be for seti@home, not that it is currently using 100% of your resources now. |

Because I'm not stupid....to not be able to tell the difference between something using 100% of my CPU and rendering my PC sluggish and something that just says 100% but isn't. -- You may be a dreamer, but I'm The Dreamer, the definite article you might say! |

I don't feel it neccessary for me to say if I was responding to anybody directly, but I figured that information would be somewhat helpful to the topic, cause I see people do things like that on a regular basis. Another option to use is right click on the BOINC systray icon and select 'Suspend', or it may be shown to be set on 'Run Always' or 'Run Based on Preferences'. If that does not work, the program is broken, or you have a malfunction with you operating system. |

Well, looks like there's bug if you have a separate 'home' preference...it won't see that you want it to only run when idle...even if I set it to 'no' in both 'home' and the general preference. general was the settings to use when running on Linux (which is mainly known as my 'work' preference, since that's my work machine.) I suppose if I thought about it sooner...I would've made 'work' mean Windows boxes (both start with the same letter...and 'home' would be Linux, not sure what parallel for that 8-) What I did was take my 'work' settings and put them in a separate preference, and move my 'home' settings into general and remove the 'home' preference. Now the Windows clients correctly suspend on activity. -- You may be a dreamer, but I'm The Dreamer, the definite article you might say! |

I am having the same issue as well. 100% cpu even while working. I have 3 computers runing boinc 2 with home prefrences and 1 with work prefrences. When I have the default and home settings set to not do work while it is use. The cpu runs still at 100% running as if I had the prefrence set to yes. In my work prefrences I have this option set to yes to do work while in use. And it in deed does work this way. However if I change this to no to match my home and default prefrences it will work the why it is suppose to and doesn't run while the computer is in use. So there must be a bug with the home user prefrences, not taking effect, for this prefrence. It also works if I delete the home prefrences so it using the default prefrences. |

I found out that my HyperThreading Intel processor running Windows 2000 detects 2 CPU's and uses them both which causes immense slowdowns. Since I changed the settings to use only 1 processor this bug stopped. I reccomend limiting your use to 1 processor only, unless you are using XP or W2k3, which are known to work better with the new technology. |

I found if I set boinc's affinity for only one CPU it works. And, from the beginning I had my default preferences to use only one CPU (and I have no separate home preference). Well. I noticed last night that there were two processes running....though it was effectively only using 'one' CPU, because they inherited the CPU affinity setting from the parent BOINC process. Not quite what I had in mind though.... The Dreamer -- |
