The rash of troubles SETI seems to have with its servers indicates to me that the basic system design is flawed and in bad need of a complete rework. Either that or SETI is trying to squeeze money out of someone. Possibly students are doing work that should be undertaken only by the professors themselves.

I could understand a few minor problems but the ones SETI has are stalling its entire public system.

I think the same could be said of much software. Like Windows, for instance. I'd bet on SETI's problems being solved first, though.

A Mr. Nick Cole seems to feel as you do.
He started a thread in the "number crunching" forum of this site. Many replies are there that might help you.

On a more serious side, when you think of the millions (and more) of work units, results, bandwidth traffic, scheduling, analysis, database manipulation etc etc which goes on in Seti and indeed BOINC overall.
It is a wonder not only that it doesn't crash every second day, but that it works at all as well as it does.
My hat comes off to the guys running it.
