As much as I'd like to see a good Intel-bashing, don't.

Check your facts - The best way is to hit the press releases and confirm the statement with other journals. A quick Google resulted in many "Intel Pentium Recall"s, but most (if not all) refer to events of the past millennia (FDIV and PIIIs, mostly). The Inquirer is the only one alleging a P4 recall, and (IMNSHO) is far less reputable (and maybe even far less respected, too) than the Register, Slashdot, and Wired combined.

Moral of the story: Don't believe anything you read in your browser.

By the way, I have your credit card number and PIN.

If you're up for an interesting (albeit rather lengthy) read, check out this complaint from AMD.

Cheers,

You would also expect to see at least some sort of notice on either Intel's main page, or at least their support page.

When you find too many cushy, euphemistic, good ol' "Q" words in a press release, you know the s hit the fan.

Tech notes don't need to address problems in direct terms, but a PR agent dancing a ballet (read: inventing cutesy phrases like "I.C. oopsie") is a dead giveaway.

BTW - Don't forget man, woman, and UID. !-)

I've got inside information-They didn't want to make Bill Gates mad- The chips have apparently become sentient, they're refusing to run Windows platforms.
I demand a refund. Oh wait, I didn't pay to join,

A call to intel tech support confirmed it today, there has been a recall on P4 expensive edition processors sent to distributors in july.

Don't believe me? Call them yourself. Make sure you speak to a manager first because some of the people who don't speak english don't know about it.

That's exactly why I don't believe you. The first guy I got couldn't even pronounce "Pentium". The second guy reminded me of this. Third fellow said, "Yes, we are recalling the Pentium."

"Finally!" I thought. "An intelligent and informed human being!" So I asked "How do I know if my Pentium is affected?", knowing that this exactly the kind of title that would be on a tech support document.

"Well," he began, "you will notice that there is error in division computations."

Shudder. "Are you referring to the FDIV bug?", I enquired.

"Yes."

Shudder, again. "I meant something more recent. Like on the P4s."

Silence.

"Hello?"

More silence. I was about to hang up when this poor bastard, who's only mistake was to pick up the phone, said "No, I have nothing for the Pentium IV. There was a Pentium III --"

Cutting him, I gave my "OK, thanks, bye, >click!<" - A sort of CTRL-ALT-DEL for telephony. Meanwhile, the press room still doesn't mention it.

The tech support at Intel is quite... horrible.

You must speak with a MANAGER that speaks english.

secondly you have to SPECIFY the Pentium 4 extreme edition 3.73Ghz with 2mb cache and 1066FSB.

It is confirmed. I had to speak to 2 managers before I got to one that knew what the hell he was talking about.

YOU MUST SPEAK TO A MANAGER. THe manager will call you back the following day.

"Extreme" or "Expensive"? Either way, it's kinda moot a point - The cat's out of the bag now, but not by Intel. Maybe someone should remind their PR dept. what happened when the FDIV news spread and they were the last people to mention it... :-/

I bet he's been fired by now due to a NDA in the contract. I'm also willing to bet that the chip affected is Apple's step-up CPU (Just call it Mac OS Mojo).
