I am having this problem too (BOINC Suspended logo when the Win XP screensaver should be running. I have checked other posts on this subject and haven't found an answer yet. I am running both SETI and Climate Prediction, changing every hour - neither of them are suspended in their settings. BOIN 4.45 is set to run after 2 mins idle and windows screensaver after 5mins.

Being a part of Seti@home was important to me, but BOINC has made running it much too complex for ordinary. I am sure that you must be losing volunteers at a very high rate - surely most people just want a simple screensaver they can download and get running with a few mouse-clicks. I am pretty computer savvy and I had to get my son's help (he has science and PC qualifications and even HE can't get it running on his PC) - PLEASE throw BOINC away and start again!!

Are you here to ask questions, to get help, to get BOINC running properly? Or are you just here to trash BOINC because you can't get it going, despite the fact that many many other people have gotten running without any problems?

If you want help, there will be plenty of people here to help. If you are going to talk trash about BOINC, then please take it somewhere else. It is not polite to talk trash about BOINC, in BOINC's back yard.

Hi Tim, I think that BOINC might be "misunderstanding" your screensaver. If BOINC thinks that your screen saver is you being "active", then you will only be able to crunch for the 3 minutes between when BOINC starts because you've been away for 2 min, and when the screen saver turns on!!!

Although it is perfectly reasonable to not want BOINC running while running intensive programs (rendering programs or graphics intensive games), there is no reason to turn BOINC off while you are checking your email or surfing the web... or doing most of the things an average computer user does (you may not fall into this group, but in general it's true).

If you have not left BOINC yet, I would suggest that you TRY changing the settings so that BOINC runs all the time. If this clears up the problems, then it is a conflict with the screen saver and we can try to bring this up to the developers. If you notice little or no difference between when you run all the time and just when not using the computer, I would suggest you stay with that.

I hope that your first 3 days with BOINC haven't been too frustrating and welcome to the team =-)

Hi,
I installed SETI July 25 (yesterday) and have the same problem. When the screensaver comes up I get a 'BOINC suspended' message after a half second of normal graphics. If I set BOINC to 'run always' the screensaver works fine...possible conflict. I would prefer not to have BOINC always running. I've tried many combinations of SETI preferences and screen saver settings to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Screensavers have three functions:

1. Saving the screen (!)
Today's screens need no savers (LCD cant't burn in...)

2. Security
If you make'em password protected then you can leave your computer on without having other persons fingering. This usually is no issue in my case.

3. Fun

Screensavers, on the other hand, can impact your system. This - admittedly - was especially so with older systems. I remember dozens of cases when I had to clear workstations under W95 - W ME, after they suspended because of a lousy programmed screensaver.

Thus I got used to NEVER use any screensavers at all, be it Seti or others. If ever I have to because of security reasons, then I use the MS default screensaver.

Try extending some astute and discerning empathy while you consider us members of a team, some, perhaps most of us joined Seti before BOINC; I suspect that nearly all of us had no or negligible trouble until then. Why treat our enthusiasm with contempt?

Umm … did you notice the message you’re responding to is more than a year and a half old? I doubt the author will read your advice; he hasn’t posted here since last fall.
