The nastiest virus ever created: Seti-BOINC!?
(nastiest because it comes with users request, in good faith to do some beneficial work, not with downloading from some pirate web-sites and it is not recognized as virus by my most advanced virus protection!)

What else I can say after years of giving my computer time to crunch thousands of results with millions of others and now, after forced to move to BOINC when Classic sites were stopped, I am only seeing (from all these “spiderweb-like” message boards) that many if not most of us are experiencing to participate in time consuming and worthless project. “No work from project” is the most common answer we get! Last straw to break camels back was when BOINC started to block my modem stopping my internet and e-mail access. I definitely must work offline with my dial up and got nervous when almost each time when reconnecting I saw the warning: “Program has changed…do not….allow if etc.!!!”
It gave me a lot of work and all day (or several, as it repeated) to find out the guilty and then BOINC stopped even to react to icon in notification area. And then when Windows did not want to remove the program, that was really enough!
After I managed to close processes from Control Panel system hardware, Windows (hopefully) removed the program. This is not the procedure recommended by Windows, and not known by majority of us “normal” users, especially in developing countries where people only have dial – up and working without any hope of IT support. I read in one of these threads, in a pages long technical description of how to clean some bugs that assumptions (of author) is that user is mostly member of some LAN or company’s intranet requiring all proxie’s settings etc. This is (was) not the case with Set Classic which was not the site for programmer-nerds only!

I only hope that the possible remains of BOINC will let me now continuously to use my modem. Then I might look some time in future if there is any significant and reliable update in project, otherwise Good Bye Seti! Or other projects – no question until that!!

sorry you feel that way...but the vast majority here are getting along just fine...there have been occasional problems...but nothing serious enough to cause human casualties...if you just started seti boinc recently...well i guess things have been a bit rough the past couple weeks...but this is evolving technology...and some growing pains are to be expected...i really hope you hang around and give boinc another chance...the experts over in the numbers crunching area of the message board might be able to help you fix some of the problems you've been experiencing...but if boinc turns out not to be for you...then farewell...and best wishes.

And what's your point of your multiple postings?

You have posted the same here and here!

EDIT: I took a look at your posts and you have actually posted the same 6 (six!) times!

I use a modem. No problems whatsoever. I believe the virus on your system isn't BOINC.

Edited out all the whining...

I have 124,000 credits and I'm no programming nerd, my 11 year old
Son could install and run BOINC.
I'm using dial up and haven't run out of work to crunch in probably
6 months, my computers are running perfectly.
There are times that I can't get any new work because of technical
problems but I always have enough to keep crunching.
I seriously doubt that BOINC is blocking your modem or your
Internet service, sounds like you might have spyware or a Virus
that has nothing to do with BOINC.
Too bad your leaving, I'm missing you already ;)

Hi CR.... You took the words right out of my fingers.... >:-) His post was a copy/paste from an inappropriate post in Fuzzy's "Donations" thread on NC. I always fail to understand why people have to blame SETI or BOINC for the problems they have with their PCs/OSs. SETI and BOINC have never caused any problems on my PCs or with the OS. I guess it's easier to blame someone/something else than to spend some time trying to track down the "real" problem. >:-)

I don't think you would know a real "Virus" unless it BIT YOU ON THE BUNS.

From what I've seen over the years it's because they're either too lazy to locate the problem or too cheap to have someone do it for them if they can't figure it out. It's far easier to whine and complain, especially when it involves Classic vs BOINC and your already pre-disposed to hate BOINC because your precious Classic is being retired and you can't recrunch the same WU for the hundreth time.

I am amazed at the number of posts here and elsewhere which constantly whinge and whine at not being able to upload or download. I look after a business network across 2000 Km (1600 miles), where downtime is measured in seconds, so I know to expect Murphy's Rule to show up every now and then.

I tend to keep an eye on my BOINC computers on a weekly basis, but before complaining or looking for someone to blame, leave it a few days to see if it catches up, then look at the server stats, and forums for a possible reason.

My question is... Is there a common place where messages are left by the admins for users to go and check for possible problems ? A simple web page with up to date comments would do such as "Date: Server down, please be patient" or "Network congestion, we are working on it."

We might get less postings if people could look at some simple current status notices. If there is already such a site, it might be prudent to publicise it.

Winkle, in general the probability is bigger for the dev's to notice, if people post over in the Number Crunching forum. This is the more chatty part, so they rarely look here. But they look very often over at Number's.

Hear, hear.... >:-) I build my own boxes and am capable of figuring out most problems. IF, I should run into one that just completely stumps me, I go seek help from a higher source, the local computer shop.... >:-)

Some of these people don't seem to have the capability to "research" their problem[s]. They don't bother to read through the threads. They just want to whine about whatever problem they are currently having. Then whine about the next, and the next, and the next....

What sucks is a thread created by a plonked author still shows up in the thread list.

Yep, I agree. No sense in hijacking a useless thread and making it useful, if there's no fun involved.... >:-)
