MOSCOW(AP) NASA's mission that sent a space probe smashing into a comet raised more than cosmic dust _ it also brought a lawsuit from a Russian astrologer.

Marina Bai has sued the U.S. space agency, claiming the Deep Impact probe that punched a crater into the comet Tempel 1 late Sunday "ruins the natural balance of forces in the universe," the newspaper Izvestia reported Tuesday. A Moscow court has postponed hearings on the case until late July, the paper said.

The probe's comet crash sent up a cloud of debris that scientists hope to examine to learn how the solar system was formed.

Bai is seeking damages totaling 8.7 billion rubles ($300 million) _ the approximate equivalent of the mission's cost _ for her "moral sufferings," Izvestia said, citing her lawyer Alexander Molokhov. She earlier told the paper that the experiment would "deform her horoscope."

NASA representatives in Russia could not immediately be reached for comment.

Scientists say the crash did not significantly alter the comet's orbit around the sun and said the experiment does not pose any danger to Earth.

Can you say "court roulette"? Yet another pathetic attempt at trying to get money for nothing.

That's what I was thinking.... "Moral sufferings.... deform her horoscope...."? Come on, give me a break!

LOL! Stephen, I hope it's not true. May the forces always be balanced!

Hmm... if she were a US citizen and would have the 'right' lawyer... I would give her a 50:50 chance ;)

I can see how deliberately putting an object in the way of a comet would minutely ruin the balance of the universe, even deform her horoscope, but I can't imagine that claiming that much money would do any better to her horoscope or her life in general. So just watch the lawyer on the other side say that same bit. ;)

I was wondering how long it'd take environmentalists to get in gear.

Deep Impact had about as much "grace" as doing archaeology with TNT.

At least we weren't drilling for oil...

Well at least it wasn't as bad as that 19th century amateur British archaeologist who
used dynamite on the back of the Spyhinx's head to see if it was hollow.

Maybe we should start a group of "Cosmic Police" and start handing out tickets for littering the solar system with "junk" from here.... >:-)

Just saw her on the news.... She's blonde and cute. Evidently, she tried to STOP the Deep Impact project before it left, to no avail.... She's suffering from headaches and such, since the inpact, she claims.

We'll settle the lawsuit this way. She crunches boinc, posts her pic in her profile, and I'll make her BOTD. It's a win-win situation.

"She earlier told the paper that the experiment would "deform her horoscope."

I'm a-thinkin' that doing all them thar horryscopes done deformed her brain.

Oh my and lets hear it for the poor comet. How naughty of us to whap it with our probe. Why do we need to know how the Solar System came to be? Shucks, if we would all just turn off our AC, stop driving, and go to bed when the Sun goes down the Earth would clean and wonderful again...or maybe we should just stop breeding like bloody bacteria.
