More of those assholes. Now titled "Your account is suspended for security reasons"... Dear Planet Member, Your e-mail account was used to send a huge amount of unsolicited spam messages during the recent week. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and confirm the attached document so you will not run into any future problems with the online service. If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to cancel your membership. Virtually yours, The Planet Support Team I've got questions on this though: 1. Are there non-unsollicited spam messages? Ones that aren't advertisements, I mean. ;) 2. Still, if my account is suspended, then how can I get online to read this shit? (Luckily in the spam box my ISP has on webmail). 3. Have these guys ever thought what the first thing you do when you can't get onto the internet is? Yes, you call the ISP's helpdesk... by phone. I run a share ware program intended to report Spammers to their ISP in the hope their activities will be stopped. I've been running it for almost 2 months and although the number decreased after the first two weeks it hit a plateau at around 100 a day. I'm no expert but it seems most of the abuse comes from China, Korea, Russia and various places in some third word countries. Contrary to what was said above, most of these Spammers are sophisticated enough to bounce messages directed to their SPAM abuse addresses, use ISP that don't care or likely make money by hosting this kind of traffic. I can't see any way to get to these people. Finally, the SPAM fighter program will also send reports to the internet carriers who allow their machines and connections to be used as a gateway to other parts of the internet (please forgive me if my characterization is misleading). Most of these companies don't seem to respond either. I don't know if they can do anything or if the volume is to great to handle. The up shot is I'm ready to give up on my crusade to get back at spammers. ID: 127896 · |

I've said this some time ago: One of the simplest ways spammers get peoples email is using programs to snoop for addresses from message boards, say like this one. Well, there is one neat thing that can be done to fight usenet 'harvesters'. You do this by poisoning the webpage with all kinds of junk email addresses (CGI script) . So when the harvester bots scan a certain webpage looking for victim email, they end up with lots of infinate loops made by poisonous addresses instead that pollute their lists, haha. The email harvesters that spammers use are programs on their computers that search the net for things like the '@' and mailto HTML tags on web pages. That's what the robot does, it spends all its time scanning. So the crawler is in a remote location. The poison CGI script program is installed on the web server you want to protect. There are some scripts out there that can be installed on a certain page in the HTML that you want to protect. But a complete CGI script program, like Wpoison for example, installed on a web server is way better. I'm not sure if it's 100% secure though. ID: 128984 · |

It indicates that there must still be a percentage of people that actually fall for it, however small... Does anyone actually have firsthand knowledge of someone that fell for such a scam? Would anyone actually admit it? If you're wise enough to go through the process of obtaining an ATM card and understanding the secrecy of a PIN code, how is it that you'd be fool enough to part with this information at the request of an email? The fact that these types of phishing hoaxes are still being manufactured and circulated is the funniest factor for me. You'd be surprised at how often this scam works and it works because Joe & Jolene Average out there are basically stupid. There's frequently reports on the local TV news and local papers warning about these scams and they always have a few people that want to show how stupid they really are by being interviewed about how they were taken in. That takes care of the 18-65 age group who really should know better. Seniors are another group who are even more easily pulled into these scams but for other reasons. Given that more and more of them are getting computers to keep in contact with family and usually much more trustworthy of people, they do tend to trust things that look official. Besides, if the local senior population around my location is any indication elsewhere, half are bordering on senility. If you're wise enough to go through the process of obtaining an ATM card and understanding the secrecy of a PIN code, how is it that you'd be fool enough to part with this information at the request of an email? The mind boggles. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get an ATM card. Just go to my local food store on a weekday afternoon when the senior citizens are out in force and get stuck behind a few in the checkout line. Usually the cashier ends up having to input the PIN number after the senior tells them it (and sometimes loud enough to be heard several people back in line) because they can't figure out how to swipe the ATM card in the card reader, enter the PIN number and press enter but they have an ATM card.
