Dear eBay. com customer,

You have been indefinitely suspended from eBay because our records indicate your account was involved in activities that violate our policy governing seller non-performance.

We now need you to re-confirm your account information to us. If this is not completed till June 24, 2005, we will be forced to suspend your account Indefinitely, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes.

We thank you for your cooperation in this manner .
---------------------

I hope they get more stupid every day.
a) I don't have an eBay account.
b) If my account is already suspended, what do I care?
c) For me, the date given has already passed, as I am already living in it for about an hour.
d) They can't even type English. I get time until the 24th of June, or I have to complete it before the 24th...
e) Damn, am I glad my ISP has a nice Spam filter. :)

Dear eBay. com customer,

[snip]

e) Damn, am I glad my ISP has a nice Spam filter. :)

The best one I ever got was one phishing e-mail sent to me but using my name and e-mail address as the sender telling me that my account on one of the forum boards that I administer was suspended and I needed to re-verify my information as well as pay a $25 charge for the "new" annual fee for the forum account. LOL.

I found out who sent that one pretty quick and nailed them.

Perhaps I'm being particularly stupid here (hell, not just here!), but how does one go about finding out who is sending spam emails or trying to hack into my computer?

Cheers :)

Look atthe headers.. They are smart enough to change the From: header, but the receiving MTA always puts a Received: header entry in the header. There are any number of ways of tracing back the IP address in that part of the header.

Real hackers will make it real difficult for you trace them; however, wannabe hackers haven't got a clue that every packet that traverses the internet has a source and destination IP embedded in the packet. Again you can use any number of toys found on the internet to trace the IP back to an ISP.

As for these Phising messages they are always HTML so they can "hide" the real URL in the link. Look at the message source and the real will become quite visible. If they are smart they proxied the URL, but they usually aren't all that smart..

I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue.

many times the phishing messages are riddled with misspelled words and typographical errors.

That's exactly how I found who it was. I looked at the header and saw which ISP it originated from and luckily it was an odd one that I knew one of the posters used and was able to figure it out easily from there. An experienced phisher he was not.

I'm sure someone out there may know for sure but I think you can use a third party or anonymous remailer that strips out the originating headers to help hide the tracks and make it more difficult to trace.

But mass mailings are not as desperate as those who join discussion groups, leaving a valid email and IP behind, to spam about their crap.

Caught in my Spam box today:

Dear Planet Member,

We have temporarily suspended your email account *****@planet.nl.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information (i.e. change of address).
2. Submiting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
3. An innability to accurately verify your selected option of subscription due to an internal error within our processors.
See the details to reactivate your Planet account.

Sincerely,The Planet Support Team

Problem is, my ISP is Dutch. I would think they would send me a written warning through snail mail in Dutch, not an email in English to an email box they themselves just disabled. ;)

Then there's their reasons:
1. Where's the camera that keeps an eye on me 24/7?
2. Err, why did they validate me in the first place, 7 years ago?
3. It's inability. Yet if you have problems with your processors, is that my fault?

Stupid. :)

Mutual friend perhaps? ;)

I've got invites from lots of friends who are actually in (sadly), and from many many people who I sincerely don't know... probably don't even exist.
Sad part is this is my 'friendly' spam.. other email requests me to lose weight, have a 'manhood' upgrade, and watch Stefy's new video...

Yeah, I'll do that.
