I'm trying to get BOINC to run on a P4 1.6Ghz PC running FreeBSD v5.4. I'm getting these message: 2005-05-16 20:27:02 [---] get_local_network_info(): gethostbyname failed 2005-05-16 20:27:02 [---] get_local_network_info(): gethostbyname failed Just wondering what I need to do to resolve the above. you need to set the machine's host name. refer to FreeBSD documentation as there are different ways to do this. im not sure which boinc looks for. functionality is not be affected, but your computer list in BOINC will have blank spaces for names. |

I already know this plus my IP address was not recorded at SETI and according to SETI this machine has -0 memory when in fact it has 256 MB. I'll keep pluggin'. Thanks.... i think boinc grabs the hostname from records from the hosts file Well, I pretty much have the installation figured out. I need to use KPackage to install, but.... KDE will NOT allow me to log in as root. I finally found the KDE Main Configuration file and have tried to edit the line that states: AllowRootLogin=xxxx The line states false. I am not allowed to edit the file from any editor in KDE. My question is: How do I boot without having KDE start up? I have yet to figure that one out. Thanks for any help.... i think boinc grabs the hostname from records from the hosts file open up any terminal window inside KDE and type 'su' for superuser root priviliges. you shouldn't run X as a root. |

i think boinc grabs the hostname from records from the hosts fileKDE will NOT allow me to log in as root. I have tried that several times and even tried from the "Run Command" in the "K Menu" to no avail. KDE just will not allow me to "switch user" to root for administrative rights. i think boinc grabs the hostname from records from the hosts fileKDE will NOT allow me to log in as root. what terminals are installed, xterm? eterm? some linux distros require a user to be in a certain group to allow su access. i don't know about FreeBSD. i have a 5.3 disk here but its not installed on anything. another way you should be able to get out of X/KDE is hit ctrl-alt-backspace, then logout of whichever user's shell is open. that should get you a login prompt where you can be root. |

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "terminals", but to run a terminal program in KDE I use one called Konsole. I've been finding out a few things about FreeBSD. If I understand correctly, FreeBSD is Berkeley's flavor of Unix and is older than Linux. It contains a Linux emulator to run Linux apps and whatever. I believe that KDE is Linux and not Unix which is why I'm having problems trying to install such things as Firefox and BOINC. I can get as far as a login window asking me for the root login password. Since KDE does not allow root login I'm caught in a catch 22. CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I forgot to try that. I've been busy with other things as well that it slipped my mind. Thanks for reminding me, I'll check it out. Have a great Memorial Day!
