I received this error message on the first version of boinc that I installed so is it possible that instead of being due to an older version it was because of my selecting the runs when anyone is logged on choice? If I reinstall it and select the recommended choice will this clear it up? 4.37 seems to have uninstalled 4.19, but 4.40 didn't uninstall 4.37. If I uninstall using the XP program won't that delete all of the files? |

4.37 seems to have uninstalled 4.19, but 4.40 didn't uninstall 4.37. It's recommended that you Uninstall 4.19 prior to installing the newer Gui based versions. Now that you have installed 4.37 over 4.19 and subsequently wrote over that with 4.40, I'd recommend using Windows Explorer to delete the "lockfile" it can be found in the Boinc folder under Program files. Then restart your puter. You can read more about this error message here and find out what to do about it. |

Good morning, Pilot. :) Thanks, yes, I had read that. Sorry, I couldn't find the uninstall program. :( Obviously from your response I definitely should have asked this before over installing: How do I uninstall piecemeal without uninstalling the project files? I'm used to a program specific uninstallers and am new to XP as well. Will XP give me a choice of which files to uninstall? So far I've only seen "repair" and "uninstall" for the entire boinc program file. I'm afraid to do anything. I want to reinstall 4.40 (without over installing) using the runs only when I am logged on option, since the lockfile error problem began with the first version I had installed and I just realized today that it is probably because the program is running in multiple logins on the computer. That way I can still choose "run always" in preferences then without the other XP logins interfering, hopefully? |

Good morning, Pilot. :) I'm used to a program specific uninstallers and am new to XP as well.
hi again, Windows has it's own uninstaller, You can find it by clicking on "start", then on the right side locate and click on "Add/Remove programs", when the next window opens scroll down to "Boinc". You might not need to go through all that. Point your mouse at the "start" button, then RIGHT click, select "Explore", find the folder "Program Files" and click on it. It should open up that folder. Look for "Boinc" and click on that. find a file called "Lockfile" Right click on that file and select "Delete" then confirm it. Restart computer and see if problem is gone. does this help? Warning, I'm leaving Michigan for South Carolina here in about an hour, so I might not be here to help you. tony |

Maybe it resolved itself when I logged everyone else out and used norton clean and safe because I can't locate a lockfile in there now. Thanks for everything, have a great trip Tony! Kathy |

Kathy, Since I'll be leaving, I'll walk you through the next step. I hope you don't need it as it's more work. First, follow previous instructions to uninstall Boinc. Second, use Explorer to find the "Boinc" folder, right click on the Boinc folder and select "Delete". This should pretty much remove Boinc from your system. (there might be some residue in the "Msconfig" and Register, but I don't think you'll need to mess with that). Now Reinstall "Boinc 4.40" and you then need to user the "Account Key" and URL sent to you in the Email from Seti to "Attach to Project". This to should fix your problem, but is alot more work. If you get a Winsock error, you probably have more than one instance of Boinc in your "Msconfig", and that'll need to be removed. Good luck tony |

Save it if you want. You do know that there is a keyword search function where it'll bring up every thread containing the keyword don't you? From the main page, under community click on message boards, then towards the top there is a link to Keyword Search. It works well. |

Sort of a vacation, LOL yeah right. If you remember I'm in Michigan to prepare and sell a house so I can pay for my Cancer treatment. I have two doctors appts down there, my daughters HS graduation, and my wife and kid are taking a cruise. I'll be watching the dogs, fixing the tractor she broke, fixing the two puters she broke. Rearranging the shop to fit everything I'm bringing down there. and many other honey do's I'm sure. then in a few weeks I'll be back up here to finish (hopefully) tony Yes, I'll be on down there. Thanks for your good wishes. Logging off now bye |

Tony, I remember, i was just hoping you were heading down to get some well deserved rest. But your "Honey Do" list seems to out weigh everything else. As most of us are used to. I think my beloved breaks things when I am in the hospital, just so i have something to keep me busy when I get home. Will look forward to hearing from you while you are in SC. Un-installing BOINC does not remove any of the status or configuration files. And historically if there has been a change to the files the BOINC executables have made the changes as needed. In general, to do an install all you have to do is to just install the new over the old. Going from one of the 4.1x versions to the 4.2x and later did not work well without an un-install. The safest process is to: 1) Stop BOINC 2) make a copy of the BOINC Folder 3) Un-install BOINC 4) install BOINC 5) Start BOINC There is a FAQ topic on it ... somewhere ... |

Thanks, Paul. :)
You are most welcome. Being able to answer the rare question is about the last thing that is helping me retain what little sanity I have left. :) Remember, there is no dumb question. So, keep asking ... |
