Does it run Windows 2000? And where the heck is the CD/DVD drive?
LoL. Something that big and expensive better be able to cook, clean, and do my dishes and laundry for me as well. Otherwise... I ain't interested. :) |

Maybe it will be sufficient to run Longhorn. We laugh now, but some day we will have these in our wrist watches. Thanks, and Keep on crunchin' John Henry KI4JPL Sevierville TN I started with nothing, and I still have some of it left. |

some day we will have these in our wrist watches.
I'd best go work out in the gym then, quickly. Or else I doubt I'll be able to lift my arm to see the time, nor go anywhere. ;) |

The ad says it does 134 GFlops/s at peak performance. That translates to 13,400 S@h credits. It'd put you in the top 5 participant stats, but I doubt it's worth it. If you ask Daniel from Oklahoma (current #4), I bet he'll say he paid less than $140,000 for his farm. Besides, you could outperform this (clunky old) Cray beast with just 10 Xeon 3.06's... ;) |

You mean all I have to do is get 10 Xeons for my new farm to get to #5?
It seems like it, yeah. That'll be on the average credit list. It'll take some time before you get to #5 on the total credit list. Buy 10 of the new (upcoming) double core Xeon 3.2's and you'll probably be #1. :) ...or go for the budget solution and be just as happy with double core AMD Opteron. |

More difficult to stay there. |

Hm, did some quick math : Estimated completion time per Alpha 21164-600 : ~8h 120 CPUs = 4 min/WU Avg. completion time for this System Assuming avg. ~30 Credits per Workunit, that would translate into 10800 RAC running full steam. Not bad for a 1999 designed System that could be scaled to 2048 Nodes (which would chunk out a WU every 14 seconds in maximum config ) |

Wouldn't mind having that one in my basement (if I had any), but I wouldn't want to pay the electric bill *lol* Oh, and it would propably be idle most of the time until more projects are available - I mean, how quick would it hit max quota? *lol* With the 10 Xeons I'd have 10 times the quota and the same amount of GFlops ;) But still, it would be a cool bragging object *lol* Hmm. Perhabs the case could be used to house a farm of Xeons(??) ;) |

you'd probably need you own dedicated connection straight to Berkeley |

Yeah, but in a little over 23 minutes it would hit the current cap of 100 WU's per day. You would have to be running multiple projects at once to really put that bad boy to full use! |

I mean, how quick would it hit max quota? *lol*
I looked closer at one of the Xeon 3.06 PC's on the top participants list (mind you, it has 4 processors), and it connects to S@h once every day and downloads upto 100 WU's at a time. So, if you multiply that with 10, you'll get about 1,000 WU's each day on 10 of these machines - provided there are any to hand out to you.... |

They could speed up the process of bringing other things online just so you could keep crunching! |

you'd probably need you own dedicated connection straight to Berkeley
You got 120 of them, so to speak: Each PE also has its own network router, connected in a dedicated 3-D torus topology with a peak speed of 650 MB/s per link in each direction. still, can it play Doom3, Halflife 2 and GTA: San Andreas at any reasonable speed? ;) |

Ageless: still, can it play Doom3, Halflife 2 and GTA: San Andreas at any reasonable speed? ;)
Reasonable speed? You get shot or run over at the instant you start the game, and don't even know what hit you! ;) BTW, what is that avatar you're using -- a big skull orbiting a planet? LOL
mmciastro: MMCIASTRO RAC 32,320 World rank 1
Go for it! If you have the cash, buy the cache... ;) (hmmm... just thought of it: if you're downloading 1,000 WU's each day, you better invest in a fast broadband line too!) |
