double download of blender happened to me as well.

can't show it to you because I've closed and opened BoincMGR since.

You'll need to delete the file to make it show up as the right size, as far as I can tell, otherwise the download just appends to the end of the existing file.

I have an itching suspicion that their download array is dying because of the mass of requests for WUs and such.

I got a feeling you're probably right about that, I've checked the site a few time (takes forever), a few mirrors would certainly help

The ironic thing is that they just got a couple mirrors together about a week ago. It's just that everyone on the seti boards heard about it, and signed up; they weren't prepared for an invasion of users -- they were prepared for maybe 1000 users downloading and crunching.

I'm going to bed.

(suspended BURP, resumed everything else)

It looks like their scheduler's down again.

LHC will experience the same thing once they come back up, denying applications eliminates that problem for them...smart thinking ;-)

eliminates the problem until they allow new users again. they're going to get more than swamped because they're an established project.

And it looks like the BURP network link is so jammed that no connections can get in or out. (scheduler unreachable, "could not connect to remote host" on main page)

Can anyone explain what socially-redeeming values BURP supports?

I mean, rendering graphics is cool, but whose graphics, and why should I donate clock cycles?

I just don't quite see the benefit....

I don't even think they've figured it out yet.

From the looks of it, those who crunch get 2 kinds of cobblestones -- the ones to track credit, and spendable ones. As far as is palnned (or at least from what I can tell), you'll be able to spend the second type to insert rendering projects into the system, among other things.

Check out their message boards for more information.

Imagine if "Powers of 10" could be rendered with the knowledge we now possess. We could go well below the subatomic level, or even further beyond the galaxy cluster.

What if you and I were able to crank out renders such as these to explain technology, or like this one to see our world's changing nature.

What's more, I also have 3D models I'd like rendered, and I'm sure that many people have dedicated boxes for the sole purpose of rendering. So if you need to find some "socially reedeeming value", ask yourself this: "What have I done for the Arts today?"

Yes, but is this rendering for Science, or just rendering in general?

... or they could be rendering projects like "Fritz the Cat" -- or purely commercial projects.

I can see BURP as a community resource for folks that do rendering and that's quite valid. Even if the community is largely for-profit.

I'm just asking why I, as a BOINC cruncher, should support it?

I never really put any thought into /what/ they were rendering, just that their project helps to keep my space heater from cooling down (or will help, at any rate).

But I have been told on their message boards that they are not going to sell rendering to anybody that doesn't crunch for them as well, and are not going to sell rendering for real money.

And I should reverse your question to you; why should I, as a BURP cruncher, validate your support? Just a thought.

Personally, I cannot tell you why you should crunch for them, and as such, won't. All I can do is relay information that I have read and/or inferred from their project site.

And as I said, the reason I crunch their numbers (or try to, anyway) is that it's a project to crunch for. (though I am going to have to start dedicating different boxes to different projects if I support too many more)
