This is all rather hilarious, and amusing.
I was originally only trying to show that even when selecting 10 days of computing, I run out in less than a day, due to the limit, and due to the network download failing. TWO issues have caused many seti guys spare cycles to run to other programs now.
I don't babysit my computer.
I complete 2 work units on an average of 4-5 hours.
I can only have on my computer at one moment in time, 4 work units. Limit imposed.
When any one work unit completes, i can get another. So it isn't really a day limit, it is a 4 at once limit.
In the past, I would simply turn on my computer on friday, and then on monday, it was still finishing up the last few work units, and i could connect, download/upload, and all was fine.
This weekend, in order to keep on crunching continually, I had to log back in every morning, and every evening, otherwise I would have completely run out of work units by friday night.
Again, no sweat, I don't mind doing it, and if I couldn't get work units, no sweat, the world won't end. So everyone chill, its no big deal, I'm not upset.

Now, since the downloads to any of mine or my friends computers isn't working, it is an issue after only 8 hours, not after 10 days.
That is what the work unit limiter is causing, nothing more.
Geesh peeps, I just mentioned an issue, and the first mailing I got back was someone jumping down my throat. So of course I get offensive about it.
I'm volunteering to help, if there are problems, there are problems.
But don't jump on people trying to help.
I'll continue to stay, because someone may have just had a bad hair day, or their boyfriend may have farted in their general direction.
But I do know of a few that said they are turning it off now.
Due to the issues, and due to the responses on here.
Peeps should work together, not jump and shout.
I don't think any of my posts have been malicious or nasty or jumping up an down or ranting or raving, etc., and some think I'm getting the sh*& end of the stick. Just volunteering.

Thanks, and Keep on crunchin'

Oh i understand and agree, Ned. My machine is happily crunching Einstein work even as we speak. And if it wasn't, i wouldn't be too upset about that either. I was just trying to understand and be sympathetic to John's situation. There are those on the board however who would be outraged at the wasted CPU cycles not actively being used for science! LoL. Fortunately, i'm not to that extreme either. ;)

I think I was the first person to respond to your original message, and I read it again.

I'm sorry if you took offense. That was not my intent.

I don't know that the scheduler code is "fair" when it decides that a host is reliable or unreliable. I haven't spent that much time looking at either the scheduler code or observing the behaviour.

There is a difference between what the SETI/BOINC servers "think" and reality, but it does set limits based on what they "think" is happening.

... from what I've read, the limits are imposed fairly quickly, and lifted pretty quickly as well.

My comments to Digger didn't mean to imply that you were babysitting the machine. I'm glad to hear that you don't because that'd be a supreme waste of time.

Again, to me it seems the best thing is neglect. Let BOINC run. If you set "connect every 10 days" and BOINC runs out of work, I'm pretty sure it'll connect sooner. If you can't get a full day's work, add a project and set the priorities.

At the moment, I'm out of SETI and LHC is down, so I'll crunch Einstein at Home until SETI is back, and I won't try to "update project" manually. It'll be fine. I'm watching because I think the BOINC design is interesting and I might be able to use some of those ideas someday.

... P.S. I'm glad to see that you're one of the "sane" ones. There is a large group that threatens to go to Berkeley and lynch the entire staff if things aren't going absolutely perfectly -- in their opinions.

Don't get to mad about that, ignore it. Here is lurking around some kind of 'cheerleader connection' that's very touchy to any post only slightly critical to anything regarding SETI (in their limited point of view). Once one of them start's to stomp on you the whole crew joins him and your lost anyway...

keep smiling ;)

Aloha, Uli
