I've been using Seti@Home for years.. literally 31,534 hours on just MY computer. I like the little data analysizer and everything. I just got the Boinc software and I'm not so sure about it. Sure the Seti servers are clogged and I haven't been able to download any work (atleast it looks that way) but without a download, I'm not really sure what I'm in for as far as using. 3/22/2005 4:58:48 PM|http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|Scheduler RPC to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed 3/22/2005 4:58:48 PM|http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|No schedulers responded 3/22/2005 4:58:48 PM|http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|Deferring communication with project for 3 minutes and 11 seconds Those are the messages I'm getting. I'm assuming it's all on their end. But without an analyser I don't know if I'm going to "like" this software. That may sound lame, but I'd like someone using Boinc to give me a little run down on how the software "works" when it's actually working. :) |

You will see that Berkeley is having power issues. Little tough to upload or download WU when the servers are down. I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue. Einstein, ClimatePrediction and ProteinPrediction are up and alive and accept new users. Gruesse vom Saenger For questions about Boinc look in the BOINC-Wiki |

Since everyone has been having this difficulty recently, I would say that is on the server side. It should clear up in a little while. Meanwhile, Paul D. Buck has done a bit of work on documentation, the link is at the end of my sig. BOINC WIKI |

This BOINC thing will not give me credit for my past work. I now have profiles that show up for SkyFrog. Is there a fix for this? Or will all my workfrom the "Classic" SETI just get lost? I will find ET !!!! |

To make the update, make certain that you keep the email addresses in both synchronized. Or, you can change the BOINC S@H account to a different email address from the classic, and activate the classic account (this only works if the classic account was created early enough - I believe before May 14th 2004). If you no longer have access to the email address as of this date, you will have to change the classic email address. If you no longer have the classic password and your email address has changed, you are SOL. BOINC WIKI |

One of the reasons that they are not being added is because they are different projects...Just like now, Francs, Deutchmarks and Lira cannot be converted into Euros, neither can the Classic WUs be exchanged for cobblestones (credits)... the currency is no longer "valid tender". The nice thing about WUs is you can still display them, and not converting them just means a little less direct bragging rights, you don't actually lose your livelyhood over it. I was idsappointed too... my WUs took 100+ hours the first year I crunched Classic, but times change... Have fun!! |

> People didn't Windows when it first came out either, now some couldn't ever > think of doing DOS commands! Bizarrely enough, when Win95 came out, and all the way up through Win98, Microsoft compiled a "progman.exe", which is the interface for Windows 3.1 and back. I guess this was for users who just couldn't stand the changes inherent in Explorer. You could get into the system.ini file and replace explorer.exe with progman.exe in the "Shell=" entry, and Win 95 would look like Win 3.1. Also, on most incarnations of the install disk from Microsoft, there was a folder called "oldmsdos" or some such that had many of the MSDOS commands old guys like me used to use. By the way, the shell could be another executable as well. I read about a guy who set it to "sol.exe" because he felt that Windows was only good for playing solitaire. I tried it. It works. |

I like BOINC, meself. The idea of being able to be involved in several projects at once through one interface appeals to me. And at least one upcoming project is taking that to the next level by using several different applications through one project. All new stuff takes time to sort the bugs out. I've been using BOINC almost since the start and now the only reason I'm still mostly using classic SETI is to try and get to 1000 WUs before they pull the plug. After one or the other, I'm on BOINC to stay. [ Murasaki: Solitaire as a Windows Shell? Gotta try that! LOL! ] |

I'm sure it will get better, there are good people putting a lot of work into it. It's disappointing that we had to take a step backwards first though. One button,"off and on" just like the old Seti, would have made it a deffinite step foward overall. [oh and the detailed notched red bar on the graph shouldn't have beed downgraded] |
