What kind of UPS did the team end up using, and what was the pin-out of the cable? I have an APC Backups ES and Belkin F6H650, and no cables for either one, and would like to get my systems to shut down gracefully.

If you google for APCUPSD you'll find a whole lot of information on the various APC units, how they communicate with the world, etc.

It also documents software for *nix, but alot of the info applies generally.

If you're running NT/2K/XP you probably already have the software.

APC cables are readily available on eBay for practically nothing.

The cables are also very simple to make, the 'smart' cables are anyway, ironicly, the 'dumb' cables are much more complex; the smart cable for my APC UPS consists of 3 connections at each end, data in, data out and ground/common, the software to run the interface and get all the status info, voltage readouts, and control graceful shutdowns, etc, is downloadable from the APC website for free.
