I have to admit, now that my PC is faster (New processor and MoBo for Christmas, 4x faster than my old dinosaur) I am addicted to processing. I have it set up on my network drive at school (I'm a young 'un) and I am currently in the process of building a second PC (With my old dinosaur in it) and all it needs is a video card and 50 feet of 10/100 cable to get it onto the router before I can start it crunching also. I guess that 300mhz in my PDA wouldn't do much, but it'd be nice to be doing ALL I can do. Now if I can find a way to get this running on my parents' computers, for my account, we'll be in business! (Please don't let my age be a factor in talking to me. There's nothing I can't stand more than being talked to like I'm four just because I'm in school.) --- Computers Crunching: Laptop (1.4GHz, 512mb RAM) Main Laptop (Dual Core 2.16GHz, 2gb RAM) |

Why keep everyone in the dark? You have no profile here at SETI so no one will even know you're a youngin'. If I were to judge your age from your post here, I would have to say you're much older than say, high school. You seem to know your way around a PC very well. And, I like the fact that you build your own boxes yourself, I do as well. And, if I were to guess, I would venture to say that I'm old enough to be your grandfather. Keep posting like you did here and you will have no problem with people talking with you, despite whatever your age is. L8R.... I've just had quite a few bad experiences in the past, where people would barely even talk to me after they found out how old I was. Granted, that was a few years back, and I'm a few years older now, but the principle remains the same. Since no one appears to be freaking over the fact that they are most likely a decade or two older than me, I'll probably add a real profile. Who knows, maybe I'll become a regular on the boards :) --- Computers Crunching: Laptop (1.4GHz, 512mb RAM) Main Laptop (Dual Core 2.16GHz, 2gb RAM) |

Who > knows, maybe I'll become a regular on the boards :) > How old are you then? If you hadn't brought the issue up yourself, no one would have noticed. If people state mature statements, I don't care about their biological age! I have met many people of very young age, who are very mature, and many people of a high biological age that seem very immature. So age has nothing to do with discussions here, statements has. So if your statements make sense, you'll be respected here, regardless of your age! :-) "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

My profile is up. If you care, the link is: http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/view_profile.php?userid=1268548 Or you can click the little head icon, but I'm sure you already knew all that. --- Computers Crunching: Laptop (1.4GHz, 512mb RAM) Main Laptop (Dual Core 2.16GHz, 2gb RAM) |

> Hi again, you are really not that young! And wellcome to the club! :-) > Oh, gee, thanks for making me feel old. Just kidding. I think I'm going to head to bed...today was the last day of school before Spring Break, and I am WIPED! I get sick right before spring break, go figure. Anyway, I'll be back in the morning, or if I sleep well, afternoon (hopefully). Thanks for being nice! Also, I feel it pertinent to note that I have crunched for SETI off and on for about 3 years now. I had a dinosaur of a computer (AMD k6-II) up until 3 months ago, and so I only amassed 60 WU the entire time I processed. Granted, I didn't process nonstop, but that is extremely low for the amount of time that I did process. The only new thing right now is this computer, and BOINC. I'm about to pass out, see you guys later. --- Computers Crunching: Laptop (1.4GHz, 512mb RAM) Main Laptop (Dual Core 2.16GHz, 2gb RAM) |

Back, in the dark ages, when I was your age, we had no computers or PDAs or walkman or cellphones or digital watches or color TVs, etc. The only computers we had was a pencil and paper. I don't believe we had calculators back then either. Then again, it's a computer, right? I envy you, you're growing up in a wonderfully, technological age, despite all the bad stuff going on in the world. Just don't grow up to quickly, stay as young at heart as is possible. Happy crunching.... >:-) Oh, I'm not quite old enough to be your grandfather, but my three kids are 23, 25 and 29 years old, if that gives a clue as to my age. L8R.... It seems that I am steadily gaining more and more credit per day...I guess that has to do with the amount of pending WU I have out there...but I doubled my credit, just today. --- Computers Crunching: Laptop (1.4GHz, 512mb RAM) Main Laptop (Dual Core 2.16GHz, 2gb RAM) |

Aaaaaugh!!! The way this thread is titled, it keeps bringing to mind an old Olivia Newton John song. >A slide-rule, an abacus, a pencil and paper, a TI-81, and a G4. >But most of the time I just do it in my head. I just put batteries back in my old TI-89. Now if only I could remember how to run it, like getting it to reply in decimal instead of fractions. Where's that damn manual... |
