Hello and welcome pincher!

A good manual for Boinc is Paul D. Bucks BOINC Powered Projects Documentation and his FAQ therein.

For credits ist's here.

ATM with all the server UL/DL hassle it can be some days for the first granted.

Given the server crashes of the last 3 days and the backlog of people trying to get and send WU, I think one must be patient about waiting for credit. I'd expect that you'd see the credit within a week or so. Remember, that 2 or 3 others who have the same WU must also finish crunching the WU.

does this help?

Welcome to the brave new world. :)

One change that catches people by supprise is the fact that there is no "instant" gratification for the "I want my credit now" bug that strikes us all ... :)

Well, that is not entirely true, CPDN does do instant granting for each "trickle" ...

Anyway, with a more rigerous approach, you get credit when you participate in a Quorum of Results which means that you have to process the work "correctly" and without error to earn credit. Once that is done, and the quorum is established you get your credit.

Over time, you will, assuming you continue to process work, get a steady stream of credit ...

... and you'll get credit -- and more if you keep crunching SETI.

Einstein may be a little faster to grant credit, but don't expect immediate credit there even if everything is up.

Here's why:

Let's say that you and I both get the same work unit. You crunch it first, and because you have the default "contact every x days" you return the work unit fairly quickly.

I've got "contact every 3 days" currently, so even if I crunch the WU at the same time, I won't report it for three days.

The third (and fourth) machines in our group may report later.

Only then will we have a quorum, and only then is there a chance of getting credits.

Seti and Einstein are 2 totally seperate projects and as such should crash at different intervals. Currently Seti is having problems and Einstein is not. That is why you are getting credits while Einstein is running but no credits even when Seti is running. Seti will get things cleared up and the credits will be forthcoming.

Part of the reason for Einstein returning credits quicker is because they have the time limit on their work units set to one week, whereas SETI has it set to two weeks. Consequently, once the initial SETI WU is sent out, you may have to wait upto 2 weeks just to get the others to return a result. If, for some reason, after two weeks a quorum is not met, then the WU will have to be sent out a second time (and possibly ANOTHER two weeks). This process continues until a quorum is met.

With Einstein, all this can be cut down by 1/2.

I'm sure there are plenty of other mitigating factors, but that is just one of them.

I hope it helped. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. There is also a ton of information in the message boards. Paul Buck also has created an extensive FAQ website. Unfortunately I don't know the URL right off hand, but you can find the URL quite easily by looking through the forums.

SETI is having a tough week -- problems with the old database server put a real crunch on the data server, and just about the time things started looking better the data server started dropping off line.

Even with all of that, SETI has been sending out new work, validating results, and basically moving forward. Uploads are slow right now (I've been able to upload four results in the past hour) and it can't be reported until it's uploaded.

Einstein is running on all new hardware, while Seti is running on older gear.

SETI is also a lot bigger with longer deadlines.

So, it can just take time for credits to actually "arrive" once you've done the work.

You know, this is good practice for when Classic finally ends. This will likely be the #1 question -- where are my credits.

It's in the very first re-post in this thread (I know it, because I wrote it ;-)

Jim,

Just find a post of mine, and it is in the signature sign, or a link if you have those suppressed ...

But it is not hard to remember, boinc-doc.net .... got my own domain :)

Paul,

Congrats on the domain. I didn't realize you had secured your own domain name. That is great news. i will have to keep that URL in mind from now on. I'm sure it will be put to good use soon.

Thanks for the labor of love for the work you've put into the FAQ. I admire you for being able to do so much and having the dedication to stick with it.

Jim

Jim,

When I first started doing this I was using the Apple "Homepage" site and used style sheets and hiding to make things work. I had been looking for a new host and found one that also allowed me to do PHP and have MySQL databases behind the scenes.

With that, I have done the bulk of conversion of the pages over to PHP and almost all of them now use PHP do to magic instead of the old style sheet stuff.

That also, incedentially, gave me the opportunity to use the new phpMyFAQ allowing people to add comments and their own questions, and the site search capability.

There are some minor problems with these systems (phpMyFAQ does not do images well, but the next version is in the works and I THINK that will be fixed there (or I can make it work)) but they do add something.

As to the last, well, working on the site keeps me off the streets ... and I do get notes from people, like you, that make it all worth while ... :)

One good thing being fully disabled and semi-house bound is that it gives you lots of free time. :)

One other good thing happened too. I had been promising my old class lecture notes to be posted but I could not make them come out decently without a WHOLE lot of work. But the new "Pages" from Apple seems to make a decent import and has an export to PDF, so, another feature ... for those that are less computer literate they may help with the background information ...
