Well as of right now I have deleated BIONC from 5 boxes and reinstalled Clasic.
As they run out and keep defering download they get converted back to Clasic.
So at this rate in a day or so all 17 will be back if they dont get things figured out.

Why not just add another project? There are others, and one of the reasons Boinc was created so you would never run out of work, if you allowed yourself to run multiple projects.

I realized that as they get more and more people here, the slower machines they are on will not be able to handle it. They are working on new machines. They have tried to migrate it all once, but something went wrong. So, Monday, February 7th will be another try. After the migration, and a couple of days for the database to start catching up again, hopefully we will see it running pretty normal.

It's also fine to run classic, if not interested in other sciences, like Climate Predicting (Currently open), Compact Star emitions (Currently taking sign ups), building the Cern Accelorator (Currently running but out of work), or Protien folding to find information about cancers and maybe other diseases (Currently running).

Give it a try. You might find the next cure to something, or find out when the next ice age is coming, etc.

Why Delete BOINC only to have to Reinstall it again. Do work for Classic until BOINC gets their Equipment back online and running. Then just go back to BOINC. That is what I am doing. Classic is my Fall Back. When Classic is Gone for good I will probably install Einstein as my Fall Back.

Adding another project would be one solution.

Another solution is to just not worry about it.

BOINC isn't going away, in fact, it looks like there will be more BOINC in our future, not less.

> Scott; Been with Seti since 2000. Have about 38k classic Seti WU'S and use the program as backup when Boinc is down or there is no work. This weekend as my Boinc work files dry up I am removing Seti Boinc from my machines and doing a clean install of another project. Any veterans of Seti/Seti Boinc have horror stories that they can share about no work, crashed servers, can't connect, or hardware upgrades that take forever. This latest event is why I am voting with my feet. The Boinc Berkeley staff has walked away from hundreds of thousands of loyal crunchers knowing that the current hardware will not be able to produce WU's to cover the demand over the weekend. Added to this, the project will be down on Monday for an indefinate period while the upgrades take place. I hope the administrators of my new distributed computing project have learned some good lessons from Berkeley, as Berkeley hasn't.

Best wishes to you all, crunch on (got work?)

I, too have gone back to Classic, for the duration of this problem the Berks are having. I have not been able to download a SINGLE work unit on Fifteen computers in Four days!!!

Good Luck...

Back to Classic, but I made the mistake of running the [slower] GUI version.
Gotta wait another 10 hrs. for this WU to finish.
Then I'll install the OS X text-based version.

That's odd... my 9 computers have managed to pick up some 75 WU's since the trouble started on february 4th... and they are connecting as the BOINC client chooses with the 'deferring communcation for xx time' and all..

I'm sure the guys at Berkeley are trying hard to keep all us crunchers happy.. but sometimes that seems to be a huge task..

Luckily, there are other BOINC projects and the classic SETI is still running.. hope that will ease the pain for the unlucky people running out of work.

Yet another thread that only goes to show just how little common sense some people have. You seem to conveniently forget three important facts:

1. This is a beta test. Since when do beta tests work flawlessly?

2. My computers have their cache set to 10 days....and I haven't run out of work EVER. I signed up for BOINC the day it was released, and my computers have worked constantly ever since. If you weren't so greedy for credits that you set your caches at 1 day or less, you wouldn't have this problem.

3. There are other projects you can sign up for. Seti@home is not the only D/C project out there.

Most of us here know that this is a beta test, and most of us have enough foresight to keep our computers from going idle when Seti goes down, so don't give us any of this "voting with my feet" bullshit.
You will be assimilated...bunghole!

Damn I thought this was out of BETA testing.
Maybe I should shut them all down till they get it right

Its all good I knew it was out of BETA just wanted to play.

I will stick around,They all won't run out as I am getting some work for some of the boxes.
But the ones that went back to Classic will proably stay till the end.
I started with SETI and will end with SETI dont want any other projects so if it goes out I will save about $100+ a month on electric.

Have fun going back to a program that doesn't do any new science. That leaves more Boinc workunits for the rest of us!

Borgholio; Thanks for the advice. I wish you much success with your ten day cache. If the Berks (rhymes with Jerks) produce, you are looking golden. I predict the "upgrade" will run you dry. I hope I am wrong, but "been there, done that". Keep your helpful attitude and your kind caring energy.

Regards; I'm outta here.

There have been so many "boo hoo there's no credits for a few days I'm leaving!!!" childish temper tantrums that it's hard to feel sorry for people anymore.

Goodbye. I hope to see you back when the project is running well again. We have a name for people like you - a fair-weather friend. You leave when you don't benefit and come back when you do.

I am getting WU from BOINC now and then. Two here and Two there. They are keeping my 1 Machine with a Good enough Supply. In Addition, I am also running SETI Classic at the same time in case BOINC stops sending me Work Units. Most likely by Mid to Late Monday when the Data Trasfer is Complete, everything will be just like it was. If not, I still have SETI Classic and if Necessary I will go with Einstein to keep myself Busy.

No Big Deal People. This is Volunteer Work. It is Addicting and kind of becomes part of your Life after a while, but You have to look at the Bigger Picture. We are doing this Voluntarily and for Science. You can Quit at any time or Start back up at Any Time. It is All up to You.

Matt; Thanks for the really excellent analysis. 7000 classic WU's since 1999? Your Seti farm and philosophy are part timers in a pawn shop. Appreciate your concern. Regards on your hitting 8k.

I'm not doing anything special....

I've picked up 4 work units today, and 8 yesterday.

It's enough to keep things going.

In classic, as I remember, you get one work unit at a time unless you run some third party app. to try and cache work.

That is why I find it so amazing that people are so incredibly upset over what subjectively has been such a "non event."

Haha, that's funny. I do Seti because I find the whole thing interesting. I'm having a blast. You, however, seem to think that people with more units crunched are better, and you've wet your diapers because you're not getting work units.

You take things too seriously. And no, you're not better because you have more work units done.
