Two questions... 1) When a unit is not completed on time...does the unit know this and just delete from the work tab? and also do we get less credit or does it affect our credit in any way (i.e. negatively)? 2) Say 3 out of 4 work units (of the same type) have been sent and 3 have returned and 1 is still being processed...meanwhile the 3 get validated and credit is given what happens to the 4th who is processing the 4th unit? Does the unit stop or does the person get credit too even though the units unfinished and not returned? <BR>AMD XP3200+ <img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/seti2/stats.php?userID=2327&trans=off"><img src="http://petrus.homeftp.org/bws/counter_big.php?id=7828479"> <a href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paulandrew.odell/">MY SITE!</a> |

Found this in Paul D. Buck's Credit-FAQ: **QUOTE** Returning a result that could qualify as a member of the quorum of results after the quorum has been created will not normally result in the granting of credit to that participant. This is a slightly more strict rule than existed in the original SETI@Home project. But, because of all of the controversies over the credit issues, well, a more rigorous process had to be created and this is a by-product of that redesign. *UNQUOTE* So if you return a result after the other 3 have been validated your result will be added but credit will not.....a bit unfair.... <BR>AMD XP3200+ <img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/seti2/stats.php?userID=2327&trans=off"><img src="http://petrus.homeftp.org/bws/counter_big.php?id=7828479"> <a href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paulandrew.odell/">MY SITE!</a> |

> 1) When a unit is not completed on time...does the unit know this and just > delete from the work tab? and also do we get less credit or does it affect our > credit in any way (i.e. negatively)? With the actual version 4.19 of Boinc, Boinc will crunch this WU further even if it has passed the deadline. In normal circumstances, this WU will not get credit, so let's say this WU has been crunched for nothing. In fact, your RAC will be effected. > 2) Say 3 out of 4 work units (of the same type) have been sent and 3 have > returned and 1 is still being processed...meanwhile the 3 get validated and > credit is given what happens to the 4th who is processing the 4th unit? Does > the unit stop or does the person get credit too even though the units > unfinished and not returned? If WU 4 is returned within the deadline, it will get the credit that has been given to the 3 other PC's. wuid=8508623 is one example. As you can see, hostid=401363 got the credit alocated the the 3 other ones getting the so called "canonical result" which was in that case 27.18. |

Does > the unit stop or does the person get credit too even though the units > unfinished and not returned? > After a wu have been validated, BOINC will wait till all results is either reported and tried validated, or reached their deadline. At this point, the file_deleter is run, and all wu & result-files for this wu is removed from disk. Note, the system waits on any results stuck in the validator-queue before running the file_deleter, so as long as reported before deadline there's no problem. ;) In your example, if he returns before his deadline he'll get the same credit as the rest if passes validation. If on the other hand he returns after his deadline, it's very likely his result can never be validated since there's nothing to validate agains. Since only validated results gets credit, this also means he'll not get any credit. If any of the server-processes is backlogged or offline, it's still possible to return after deadline and still get credit, but wouldn't count on it... |

> So after a deadline the WU's still need to be processed? With v4.19 yes. To avoid this kind of situation, just put the "Connect to network about every xx days" to a level that is something like 2 or 3 days. Have a look to the numbers of WU's that has been donwloaded and adapt afterwards if still necessary. Of course, don't take into account the problems we have for the moment ;-) |

> So after a deadline the WU's still need to be processed? > In v4.6x, currently in alpha, you can manually delete individual wu, and suspend individual projects/wu. It's also planned to make the client more intelligent, by taking deadline into account when switching between multiple projects, but this haven't been implemented yet. |

cool is 4.6 stable atm? if so where culd i get it? <BR>AMD XP3200+ <img src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/seti2/stats.php?userID=2327&trans=off"><img src="http://petrus.homeftp.org/bws/counter_big.php?id=7828479"> <a href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paulandrew.odell/">MY SITE!</a> |

> cool is 4.6 stable atm? > if so where culd i get it? > V4.6x is alpha, and there's still some bugs left to fix before ready for release. Also, lately there's been a new build every couple days, so wouldn't recommend to upgrade at this time. v4.66 have some problems with service-install that already is fixed in the source, but not released yet, so would expect another build within a couple of days. Still, if you really wants to try it out, get it on the normal download-page as "development". You must uninstall v4.1x before upgrading, and don't complain if your computer starts to smoke or something... A release-version is planned in 2-3 weeks time... |

I've been getting a few work units along -- enough that I haven't run out. I've got enough to run through Monday at my normal processing speed. BOINC really does handle a server outage pretty well. |

> cool is 4.6 stable atm? > if so where culd i get it? > I'm using 4.66 and it is fairly stable on my system.... Be aware this is a very early alpha software. DO NOT USE unless you're prepared to redo your system. DO NOT CRY on this board if you have to reformat your drive. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. If I haven't scared you yet, then you can get it at bottom of the download page. Click on Show development versions. This will add the extra links at bottom of page. The page URL is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?dev=1 The latest file D/L link is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_4.66_windows_intelx86.exe Did I mention USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I have my connection interval set at 0.5 days and to my knowlege I have not ran out of work, either; HOWEVER, I don't keep an eagle eye on 2 of my machines. I just let them do their things. If I run out of SETI WU's I have other projects that will easily take up the slack.
