I think the title says it all.

The server status page is from yesterday before the first try; the validator seems to work (yet) again, in the last few hours the credits kept coming.

No new announcements in the technical news either...

We were about one third or so through the database migration when the new server hung and the migration job stopped. We are diagnosing the problem now. During the migration the internal I/O mentioned below (we think it is some sort of garbage collection) was also occurring. This was vastly slowing the data movement to the new server. In addition to figuring out why the server crashed, we will wait until the garbage collection is finished before restarting the migration. It will be at least a day from now.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. Yes, I also read it. But it was an immidiate response after the crash. It doesn't tell "when", tells only "not before"...

My experience is, that they misjudge the time needed, when it comes to make major changes. OK, understandably so. I'm not angry nor dissappointed.

My concerns is, that I (and I think some other people) will run out of WUs, when the outage occurs...

Shall we say [quote] [As of 31 Jan 2005 18:50:07 UTC] [unquote]...

if there is outage, that is, there is no scheduler, no splitter, no validator, practically no DB for us.

My original question was, "Does someone know...?", I don't, appearantly Sir Ulli, you neither... :-)

On Monday morning, I changed my preferences to "contact server every two days" and got enough for two days of work. I then set back to "contact every day"....

If you're worried, pick a number like "4" -- grab four days work, and relax.

You can do that again in a couple of days if you wish.

That's why you should attach to multiple projects... I haven't come close to running out of work in a very long time.

There was a note in the developer's mailing list that said "soon" ...

OK, all of you are right. Downloaded work for three more days, looking for another BOINC project for the possibility of WU vacuum.

The funny thing is, no one gave the answer for the question. I guess, let's face it, the answer is "No"...

No offence, I really believe that these guys are working hard and I do appriciate it, but the lack of information is disturbing. We do get announcements of a bookstore opening, server stats are frozen for the second consecutive day, no changes on the technical news.

Addendum

OK - according the server status page, there are 176 (onehundredandseventyysix) WUs to send... updated while I was writing the post... I think, It's time to migrate to another project for a while :-D

Personally I believe that no stats are better than the misleading (i.e. flat out wrong) stats posted. Granted they are said to be "...approximate either because they are quickly estimated by mysql (via explain)..." but given that they fluctuate so dramatically and there is so much confusion about their meaning it's hard to give them any real significance. That being said, i would love to see stats that are more accurate so that we can all see the true progression of this project.

just my 2¢

SOP for Seti.. Guess you weren't here when Seti/Boinc used to crash every Friday after the UCB folks went home and was down 'till Monday... At that time, they provided a neat addon so you could view your stats on a cell phone.....

There are times that watching this project is almost as entertaining as watching a "Three stooges" movie!

Right now, there are 18,000, and I saw a post from Matt saying that he'd fired up another splitter, just to be sure.

Typical, you left out one of the critical facts there woody, the cell phone status features were written by Carl Christensen back when he was working for CPDN.

I guess your SOP is to leave out whatever facts you would like to make your points look good.

I know, some facts you probably don't want to see:

David 9 Sept 2004
- Added support for stats access via WAP (for cell phones)
(from Carl Christensen)

Typical, you left out one critical fact there rom, the "cell phone news" was posted when users were asking for news on the project to be posted, (as it was quite unstable), and the only news that appeared was "see your stats from a cellphone"..

Doesn't matter that it was developed by a third party (or another project). Users were asking for project info and those defending the project were stating "they're too busy to post any news"

(Kind of like the ad for the bookstore when crunchers are saying "when's the migration?" "why is the server status so wackey?")

This was before Matt started the "Technical news" (that was a good thing) and data about the 1-2 times a week crashes was nowhere to be found!

I guess we just have to agree to disagree here!

Tech News updated... migration scheduled for monday...

That means, question answered (at least, seems so), and thread closed.

FIRST the issue of the heavy unexplained IO activity needs to be resolved. Supposedly it crashed the server last migration attempt. There's no reason to think that it's going to stop on it's own.
