It seems like some of their cron jobs weren't working today. The "Server status" page hasn't been updated in over 30 hours now and the db_dump program (which creates the XML files) seems to have not run at all. I have notified Berkeley of the problem although not until a few hours ago so they were probably already in bed.

I hope its not one of the crazy nuts from Cafe SETI hacking into server to make some sort of point. That worm weaver, Human Rights and cant remember the other nut seams like somthing they would do. I hope not.

Rom is taking care of them, but it wasn't really a DoS attack. One of the nuts as you referred to them wrote a script to spam the forum..

RSS Feed says there is some kind of network issue.. Since he limited his spam to Cafe' Seti I doubt the network issue are being caused by the "nuts". I would hope UofC@B's firewall can handle a real DoS attack.

I got some credit about an hour ago, so maybe they have it working now.

Yes, things are working correctly now. db_dump ran about 3 hours ago and the server status page is being updated. However one change that was made to the XML didn't turn out quite right. The team founder's name has been added to the team XML file ("<founder_name>" tag) but the team founder isn't being escaped so if you are using a pre-built XML parser, it will barf on the 18th team in the file that has an unescaped '&' in its team founder's name. I submitted a simple fix for this and I would expect it to be working by tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest.

Call them what you want!! I was simply pointing out that I don't think they are the ones causing this and that the powers to be are handling their BS.

For the record your country is my country :)

Denial of Service is an attack on a network that is designed to bring the network to its knees by flooding it with useless traffic.

A DOS attack has nothing to do with MS-DOS :)

DOS = Denial of Service

There are many methods of carrying one out but they all have the same end result: The targeted server is no longer available for normal use. Somehow the malicious attacker floods the server with so many requests that the server can't hanlde it and either completely crashes or just becomes so slow that it is no longer usable. See here for a longer discussion of the issue.

The incident in the cafe was strictly speaking not a DOS attack because it didn't really affect the server or the network although it could be viewed as such as the cafe was essentially unusable. Depends on how you interpret the word.

Hmm... aren't we getting off topic again? :)

>This is off topic excuse me but you seem to know what you are talking about. What makes Sun Ultra 10 Workstation and the 440Mhz SPARC CPU w/2MB cache the best choice for running a project like Seti@home? I found one in new condition they want $1,995.00 for it. There is 2 on E-bay for $250.00 and looking at them it seems like old tech stuff. I was just wondering. If they could crunch a wu in say 1hr/30min consistantly I might bid on one.

They are the best because they are free ... SETI@Home to a great extent uses donated machines. If they wanted great support for the project they would use, say, an AS-400 mainframe (or whatever IBM is calling them these days, "E Series"?).
