As DB said in another thread, Congratulations ESA. Well done. Huygens has excited me more that any other space project since Viking and, much later, Hubble.
Wow, Europe.

Champagne for ESA! Let's hope that NASA can match their success with Deep Impact and a Shuttle mission to save Hubble.

One of my favorite missions was when Voyager2 reached Neptune.

I remember watching the NOVA special on it. Voyager II's motto should be "The Little Sattelite That Wouldn't Shut Up and Die" :-)

I hope there will be more and more partnerships like ESA-NASA-ISA, etc., in the future. While there is much to be done here on Earth, exploration of the solar system and beyond is, IMO, important to the spirit of humankind. And it needs to be done by humankind, not just one relatively wealthy country.

I couldn't agree more, the only way we will get to the stars is together - as a species.

I think all UK crunchers should sign the petition at Support-Aurora.org.uk - Put Man On Mars!.
There were only 4 signatures (including mine) there.
PS: Good work ESA! (and NASA)

Thanks for signing!

Every signiture does make a difference. The prime ministers office does accept internet petitions.

The UK has sat on the sidelines of human space flight for too long.

Thanks 1202PA for the link to Aurora. I read about Aurora in UK's Astronomy Now magazine. Can any interested person sign the petition? Or just UK citizens?

The petition says "To the Prime Minister's Office ... We the undersigned want the United Kingdom to be involved in all phases of the European Space Agency's Aurora Programme.".

If it were GWB, the US, and NASA, I'd sign in a heartbeat — But it's to TB, the UK, and the ESA. I haven't got a legal claim to sign.

Right. I searched the site but could find nothing that addressed who could and couldn't sign the petition. Not sure I would need a LEGAL claim to sign, since they can just disregard non-legitimate signatures. And, in the end, I simply concluded it's likely meaningless to them if some guy from California wants the UK to join the Space Patrol. Probably, they just want to hear from the folks at home who will be footing the bill.
Please post if you hear different.

I'll re-check the site. If it's a petition to change laws, I'm out, but a petition on policy change should be kosher.

I don't wanna blow it for someone later on down the road...

And why not also good work ASI (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana)?

Two thumbs up for the Cassini-Huygens mission!

There is a place for cooperation, but I also believe that its competition drives us to greatness. I'd like to see a new space-race, one predicated not on the "chestbeating" the first one was, but one where being first is a matter of national pride. The EU vs. an American alliance vs. a Pac-rim alliance (AU, Japan and others), would cover most of the able world.

Still looking for something profound or inspirational to place here.

Exactly right! In one of my posts above I referred to ASI as ISA. Either I'm dyslexic or mi Italiano no so buono. :->
